After spending most of her life trying to avoid the spotlight, she was thrust into it when Edwards was indicted in 2011 for using what prosecutors alleged was campaign money, including $750,000 from Mellon, to hide mistress Rielle Hunter and their child during Edwards' 2008 Democratic presidential bid. A jury later acquitted him on a campaign finance charge and deadlocked on five other felony counts. Mellon was not accused of breaking any laws.
Friends said Mellon should be remembered more for her contributions to the world of horticulture, art and fashion than the scandal that marked her last years.
"She's a remarkable person," said her friend, interior designer Bryan Huffman of North Carolina. "The last standing true American aristocrat."
Rachel Lowe Lambert Lloyd Mellon's mother gave her the pet name, "Bunny," which stuck with her throughout her life, Huffman said.
Her grandfather, Jordan W. Lambert, created Listerine. Her father, Gerald Lambert, built a company that made everything from Dentyne to Schick razors before it was sold to Pfizer for $110 billion in 2000.
In 1932, she married Stacy Barcroft Lloyd Jr., a businessman and horse breeder. After their divorce, she married his friend Paul Mellon - at the time, reportedly, the world's richest man. Paul Mellon, a renowned art collector, philanthropist and thoroughbred breeder, died in 1999 at age 91.
Huffman, who introduced Mellon to Edwards, said the former presidential candidate reminded her of John Kennedy.
"She liked what he said about the 'Two Americas,'" Huffman said. "She believed deeply in what he was saying."
Edwards aide Andrew Young, who wrote about Mellon and Edwards' relationship in his tell-all book "The Politician," said Mellon became so distraught when the media attacked Edwards over a $400 haircut that she sent him a letter offering to help. Mellon eventually gave Edwards more than $6 million, Young said.
He said Mellon wrote in her letter, "... from now on, all haircuts, etc. that are necessary and important for his campaign - please send the bills to me ... It is a way to help our friend without government restrictions."
Young described how the campaign used the so-called Bunny Money to hide Hunter. Mellon sent checks to Huffman inside boxes of chocolate, and Huffman would direct them to the campaign, Young wrote. Mellon's attorney said she had no idea the money was going to hide a mistress.
"She was not looking for an ambassadorial" appointment, Huffman said. "She has always cared greatly beyond herself."
Her grandson, Lloyd, said, "I think she was trying to help (Edwards) for the right reasons, believed in him, and I think frankly he just took advantage of a lot of opportunities that she gave him."
Huffman said his friend remained in good spirits despite the Edwards distraction. She had endured worse, including the 2008 death of her daughter Eliza, who had been left quadriplegic when hit by a car years earlier. She had a son, Stacy Barcroft Lloyd III, and two step-children, Timothy Mellon and Catherine Warner. The daughter was married to former U.S. Sen. John Warner.
Mellon was a "legend in design and gardening circles" who had a low-key style that was eloquent but unpretentious, Huffman said.
"She's not sitting around in velvet covered gold chairs. That's the antithesis of what her style would be," he said. "She is without the trappings someone would associate with an heiress."
When she was around 5 years old, her father let her have a little garden at home, planting the seed for her lifelong love of horticulture, he said.
A self-taught botanist, Mellon was tapped by her friend Jacqueline Kennedy to design the White House Rose Garden. She created another White House garden that was named in honor of Kennedy after her death. Mellon's Oak Spring Garden Library, which houses her collection of rare books, manuscripts, works of art and other pieces relating to her hobbies, is one of the largest repositories of horticultural information and is visited by scholars worldwide.
Mellon also was known for her exquisite taste - both in fashion and in decorating.
Her wardrobe was created by Spanish designer Crist?bal Balenciaga until he retired, at which time French designer Hubert de Givenchy took over fashioning everything she wore, according to a 2010 Vanity Fair article.
Her art collection included a Rothko reportedly worth $125 million.
Mellon spent some of her childhood at Carter Hall, an 18th century mansion in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. A donation from Mellon in 1977 helped make the home the headquarters for Project Hope, the worldwide medical outreach organization.
She attended Foxcroft, a northern Virginia boarding school.
She and Paul Mellon supported many philanthropic endeavors, but were also known to indulge. They reportedly had homes in Antigua, Paris, New York, Washington, Nantucket and Cape Cod, and a mile-long runway for their private jet. They were friends with the Kennedys and entertained Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. Until she neared 100 she practiced pilates daily, which she learned from the master Joseph Pilates in the 1950s.
Through it all, she never sought publicity. Mellon believed a lady's name should only appear in the newspaper three times: for her debut, her marriage and her obituary, Huffman said.

New Jersey Official Admits Stealing $460K in Quarters
The former public works inspector for a New Jersey village admitted he swiped $460,000 from the town parking meter collection room ? in quarters.
Thomas Rica of Hawthorne, N.J., pleaded guilty in court early Wednesday to four counts of third-degree theft after pilfering 1.8 million coins over a two-year period, according to the Bergen County Record.
Under his plea agreement, Rica, 43, will receive five years of probation and pay back the full amount over that time, the newspaper reported. He will make an initial lump sum down payment and then shell out $2,000 every month to the village over five years.
Rica lost his job with Ridgewood, N.J., in January 2013 after he was arrested for taking $500 in coins from the collection room. A year-long probe by Bergen County authorities showed that he had actually swiped a veritable mountain of change weighing about 22,000 pounds.
Authorities say Rica deposited the loot in his bank account. Under the terms of his plea agreement, Rica cannot work for another municipality.
He does not face jail time.

Dangling Toddler Caught by Neighbor After 3-Story Plunge
A crying 3-year-old seen dangling from a telephone wire outside the third story of a Burbank apartment building escaped injury when a neighbor caught him as he plunged to the ground.
Konrad Lightner was moving furniture with his wife Sunday night when he noticed the toddler's head sticking out the window. The boy seemed to be trying to retrieve toys that were thrown out the window by another child in the apartment, Lightner said.

A 3-year-old boy was saved by a neighbor and his box spring after falling from a third-floor window on Sunday, March 16, 2014.
"He grabbed a telephone wire and started hanging from it," Lightner said. "After 40 seconds, he started crying because he understood he couldn’t go back to the window."
As the boy dangled from the wires, Lightner positioned a box spring underneath him.
"I knew I didn’t want to go against him. I tried to slow him down enough to break his fall," he said.
Lightner caught the toddler in his arms using the box spring for cushioning.
"It’s one of the most wonderful things I have ever seen," said Royce Nix, a paramedic who responded to the scene.
Lightner described the experience as "surreal."
"You don’t really carry a box spring with you everywhere, and it kind of worked out with us being there,” he said.
The boy's father, who was home but unaware of the situation, thanked Lightner for saving his son's life after a neighbor told him what happened.
Lightner said he is "just happy that everything turned out well” and the experience won't be forgotten.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A San Mateo woman lost her home of almost 15 years to a huge fire back in November. Before the shock had worn off, she had to deal with another shock, the huge PG&E bill for a home that was no longer livable. So, she asked 7 On Your Side's Michael Finney to step in and help.
It was one of those mix-ups that can be very frustrating for consumers. And as Murphy's Law would have it, it came at a time Linda Stephens could least deal with it.
Stephens opens the door to what's left of her San Mateo home. Fire swept through the residence in November. She says it took just three minutes for fire to destroy it.

"My family was here. My son grew up here. His room is next door," said Stephens.
She admits returning to see the home in such shape is still difficult four months later.
"I cry every time. I cry every time," she said.
Stephens recalls the power being disconnected after the fire. PG&E records confirm that.
"We were notified on November 9th of the fire at Mrs. Stephens's residence. Our representative did go out to the residence that day to remove the electric meter," said Jason King of PG&E.
Her PG&E bill for the month beginning just 10 days before the fire was $738. That was 60 percent more than the entire previous month.
"But what made it even worse, is in December, I got a bill for this house for $533," said Stephens.
"At that time, that representative should have entered a tag into the system letting us know, letting records and the building department, know that the meter had then been removed so the charges wouldn't continue," said King.
But that didn't happen.
So, even though the utility now knows power had been shut off to the home, its billing department didn't know it at the time.
When the smart meter failed to record any usage, PG&E sent Stephens a bill based on her historic usage.
When she called several times to dispute the charges, customer service insisted she was still living at the home.
"If I could live in here I would, but I can't so, I mean it's been hard enough without having, without PG&E doing this," said Stephens.
Seven On Your Side contacted PG&E. By then the utility had already figured out their mistake.
"My understanding is that our records department discovered the discrepancy on the bill and issued a corrected bill. Because the bill was still going to her old address, she didn't receive the corrected bill," King.
Back at Stephens's home, flowers are beginning to grow back in the garden.
"Life is coming back finally," she said.
"We apologize to the customer for the inconvenience caused by the erroneous bill," said King.
Stephens plans to rebuild her home and investigators have been unable to determine a cause for the fire.

China has installed a secure operating system known as "Kylin" on government and military computers designed to be impenetrable to US military and intelligence agencies, The Washington Times reported on Tuesday.
The newspaper said the existence of the secure operating system was disclosed to Congress during recent hearings which included new details on how China's government is preparing to wage cyberwarfare with the United States.
Kevin Coleman, a private security specialist who discussed Kylin during the April 30 hearing of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said its deployment is significant because it has "hardened" key Chinese servers.
Coleman told the Times that Kylin has been under development since 2001 and the first Chinese computers to use it are government and military servers that were converted beginning in 2007.
"This action also made our offensive cybercapabilities ineffective against them, given the cyberweapons were designed to be used against Linux, UNIX and Windows," he said, citing three popular computer operating systems.
The newspaper said US offensive cyberwar capabilities have been mainly focused on getting into Chinese government and military computers outfitted with less secure operating systems like Microsoft's Windows.
Coleman said Chinese state or state-affiliated entities are on a wartime footing in seeking electronic information from the US government, contractors and industrial computer networks.
The Chinese have also developed a secure microprocessor that, unlike US-made chips, is known to be hardened against external access by a hacker or automated malicious software, Coleman said.
"If you add a hardened microchip and a hardened operating system, that makes a really good solid platform for defending infrastructure," he said.
"In the cyberarena, China is playing chess while we're playing checkers," Coleman said, adding that China is equal to the United States and Russia in military cyberwarfare.
"This is a three-horse race, and it is a dead heat," he said.
The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission warned last year that China has developed a sophisticated cyber warfare program and stepped up its capacity to penetrate US computer networks to extract sensitive information.
"China is aggressively pursuing cyber warfare capabilities that may provide it with an asymmetric advantage against the United States," the commission said in the report released in November.
China rejected the findings of the commission and has also dismissed more recent US newspaper reports that Chinese hackers were behind a cyber attack on computers linked to the Pentagon's Joint Strike Fighter project.
