Governor Pat Quinn signed the bill which abolished the death penalty in Illinois on Wednesday 9 March 2011: Far fewer inmates were affected by Quinn's decision. And not all relatives of their victims were upset. At least one family was divided.
As a 9-year-old five years ago, Quincy Newburn had urged a jury to give the death sentence to Dion Banks, who was convicted of killing his mother in 2001 during a carjacking while Quincy and his brother, who were 4 and 5 at the time, watched from the back seat.
"I've already forgiven him for what he did, but I want to see justice in action," said Quincy, who is now 14.
Quincy's father, Tyrone Newburn Sr., 53, once felt the same way but has since changed his mind — though not because he has forgiven Banks.
"Just putting them to death would be too easy for the offender, so I figure it would be more of a punishment to let them rot in jail for the rest of their lives," said the elder Newburn, a maintenance worker for Chicago Public Schools.

A former Ford Motor Co engineer is being investigated by the FBI after listening devices were found in meeting rooms at company offices, the automaker said on Friday.
"Ford and the FBI are working together on a joint investigation involving a former employee," Ford spokeswoman Susan Krusel said. "As this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to provide additional details."
The Federal Bureau of Investigation served a search warrant at Ford offices on July 11, the company cooperated, and agents left with eight listening devices, an FBI spokesman said.
Documents filed with the U.S. District Court for Eastern Michigan showing what was seized by the FBI at Ford and at the engineer's residence show that eight Sansa recording devices were taken from Ford offices.
Three weeks earlier, the FBI served a warrant on the residence of the engineer, Sharon Leach, in Wyandotte in suburban Detroit, court records show.
Seized from the residence, according to documents filed by the FBI with the district court, were four laptop computers and a desktop computer, along with three USB drives, financial records, some documents from Leach's employer and one T-Mobile Google telephone.
A third warrant was served to Google Inc, asking for records of Leach's email account including emails sent to and from her account as well as drafts of emails and deleted information associated with the email account but still available to Google, according to court documents.
Google supplied several items, including a video disk marked as a reply to the search warrant and a cover letter, according to court documents. Google sent the items by overnight delivery on Wednesday, court documents show.
However, the court documents did not show the contents of the disk or other information supplied by Google.
"Ford initiated an investigation of a now former employee and requested the assistance of the FBI," Ford spokeswoman Krusel said.
The Detroit News, which first reported the investigation early Friday, said Leach worked for Ford for 17 years and was a mechanical engineer.
No charges have been filed against Leach, 43, the paper said.
Calls to Leach's attorney, Marshall Tauber, were not returned on Friday.
Leach placed the devices under tables in meeting rooms to enable her to transcribe what was said for her own use and did not intend to share the recordings with anyone, the newspaper cited Tauber as saying.
The devices were not installed in rooms where the company's board of directors would meet, the report said.

Dad: Boys charged in homeless deaths once homeless
Cinderblocks were among the things the 15-year-old said the trio used to beat the men for over an hour Friday, police said. According to a criminal complaint, he told police they lifted them over their heads and took turns dropping them on the men's faces.
After their arrest, the 15-year-old told police that the trio had been targeting homeless people for the past year, according to a criminal complaint. He said they had attacked about 50 people over the last few months, but had never gone that far, according to the criminal complaint.
"It's so hard that he could do that to someone where ... I mean, like I said, we came from there," said Victor Prieto, who identified himself to KOB-TV as the father of the 15- and 16-year-olds accused. "You know what I mean? We're not there now, but that's where we ... We got out of there."
His sons and 18-year-old Alex Rios were charged on Monday with murder and ordered held on $5 million bonds. The Associated Press is not identifying the minors because of their age. The teens and Prieto all have different last names.
A man at the house where police found the trio Saturday declined to comment on Monday as he watched a steady stream of reporters and photographers visit a corner lot where neighbors said the homeless regularly camped without bothering anyone.
"Everybody here seems to be pretty shocked," said William Toyama, a 29-year-old cook whose house backs up to the field between the Prieto's home and the crime scene, which Monday was littered with a mattress, a dirty pillow, clothing, broken bottles and a cinder block. "They seem to find it deplorable. Like I said, most people around here have the same opinion I do. They don't cause any trouble."
Cinderblocks were among the things the 15-year-old said the trio used to beat the men for over an hour Friday, police said. According to a criminal complaint, he told police they lifted them over their heads and took turns dropping them on the men's faces.
Toyama said he didn't know the teens, and his only interaction with them was telling them to stop throwing rocks at his dogs.
On Friday night, the 15-year-old said he was angry about breaking up with his girlfriend, and the three returned from a party and covered their faces with black T-shirts and went out to look for someone to beat up and possibly rob, the criminal complaint says.
The attack was so brutal it stunned even veteran police officers.
Prosecutors requested bonds of $1 million, but Metropolitan Court Judge Linda Rogers set it higher, citing the gravity of the alleged crimes and the suspects' potential to flee. The district attorney's office said the younger suspects were charged as serious youthful offenders, meaning they could be tried in adult court.
The two younger defendants, one wiping away tears, sat in the courtroom while Rios made his appearance by closed-circuit video from the county jail.
Family and attorneys for the three declined comment after the proceeding.
Rios told investigators he acted as a lookout while the other boys attacked the men with bricks, sticks and a metal fence pole. The younger suspects, however, told police that Rios also took part in the attacks.
Investigators have not confirmed the identities of the victims, although police found an Arizona driver's license at the brothers' home. The victims' transient background and the severity of their injuries have made identification difficult, police said.

“I have a tattoo of the grim reaper,
my hair is sticking up all crazy and I’m naked,”
said the homeowner, who asked that his name be withheld for safety reasons.
“I’m not sure if (the burglar) was more afraid of me or the gun.”

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A man in Florida apparently got a dose of road rage karma when police say he was run over by his own pickup truck after getting out to bang on another driver's window.
It happened Tuesday evening in Gainesville, Florida.
The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/1rDishr) reports 48-year-old Joseph Carl had been drinking and drove into a vehicle stopped at a red light. He got out of his truck without putting it in park and began banging on the window of a woman's car. When the frightened woman drove away, there was nothing holding his truck in place.
The truck rolled into Carl. A police report says he was taken to the hospital where he was treated for fractures in his hand and foot.
He's charged with DUI and DUI property damage. It isn't known whether he's obtained a lawyer.
