There less stress on the lawn if you don't mow it short for the winter. Once we get a frost I usually stop mowing.

It depends of the kind of weed/grass you have on your yard but most of the type are actually tough enough to stay days without rain during summer and recover very well from winter even when cut short.
Especially if you feed it during fall before it goes to sleep

Mowing/Fall

Deep mowing the grass until the weather turns cooler and growth slows down.
Then, reduce the cutting height gradually to 3.5 cm (from 7.4 cm) until the grass stops growing.
