ok, i was drawing random faces in my sketchbook for class, and one kinda said nightcrawler to me, so i finished it up with markers quickly to make sure he looked good blue.... i am thinking i may refine it, get my own design for him that can be used either for animation or comics, ( i have a coupe short ideas i wish to do in either a comic strip or animation) the only difference being that he'd get more shading for the comic version.

anywho, this is what it looks like so far, top, coloured, the bottom the sketch in my book that started it... i included that one partially because i flubbed the nose when inking and it and didn't want to re-draw it... so the nose is off, but you still get the basic idea. any input would be appreciated, this is by no means the final design, it is merely a starting point, and i figured this was the best place to come for advice to get him just right.

so now you've seen them... *my* initial thought is the nose is too long and thin, and the eyebrows a touch high, and the hair definatley needs work... but i woul;d like to hear what you all think as well.

why oh why does he have to have curly hair?? i mean sure it looks good on him, but have you any idea how hard it is to draw when you are trying to keep it simple enough for animating???? guess that's why they straigtened it for evolution...

I think it looks great, as long as you go for the cartoonie look. With that style, its hard to tell what the mistakes are. But it does look wonderful, despite the curly hair problem. I think you did great with that. Trust me, I have tons of problems drawing curly hair too. wink

Yeah, I would have to say I like your design better than those found in Evolution.

It looks wonderful! Keep it simple though, like in the sketch. Do please show us what other ideas you have in mind, maybe we can come up with something to help you out with the curly hair prob.

eh, are you *serious*? i mean, the Evo designs i think are terrific, and i aspire to design characters that well... I like the somewhat styalized, but retaining realism at the same time kinda thing they have going on. so that comment is incredibly flattering, really...

but come on folks, does this design generally match your idea of Nightcrawler? be brutal and honest, tear it apart. i mean it. it's the only way i can make it better. if something bugs you about it, say so... trust me, after a few years of art college and having a gallery on elfwood since 96, i can take it.

well you guys are just no help at all! tongue

erm, ok, i guess i'll just refine it a touch and come back... today in class(it was a lecture class) i drew some of the guys who had curly hair, so i think i will be able to get a workable hair-do from that...

    Wow nice drawing skills smile

You think you could help in drawing a couple of images for like a small comic?

sure, i really want to develop my comic drawing skills, with the animation industry in the shape it is, i figure it is good to have a backup option, but i need practice... like i said, i have a couple short ideas i would like to do, one of them featuring Nightie, th other jsut a story with 100% original characters (well the designs will be original anyway, the story is not), but if you have another Nightcrawler one, bring it on! just, maybe wait till Christmas break, (December 14-Jan 7) ok? i have a lot of work to contend with for school as well.

Well, if you insist that we try to find some room for improvement, then here goes.

I agree with you about the nose and bringing the eybrows down a bit. I'd also say you could de-pronounce the line between his cheekbones and his chin. And if his ears were to be fatter at the base and narrower at the tips, they'd have a more elven appearance.

As for the trouble with animating curly hair, keep in mind that you can get away with defining mostly just the outlines of his head, rather than idividual locks. I suppose it depends on how stylized you want it to be though...

I'm in awe of your skills. I envy you sooooo much.
