What do we know about David? Apart from him being hopelessly in love with Katchoo and having a very boring wardrobe:

    1. David is Darcy's brother.

    2. She might just be his half-sister or cousin or something, because there are so many related peopel and I think Terry said "Yakuza" somewhere.

    3. He was an Art student at NYU.

    4. He writes poetry.

    5. He was charged by the age of seventeen with murder and he was the head of a gang.

    6. Something happened to get him "born again". Don't know what yet. (it is "yet", right, Terry? Right?)

    7. He had some kind of incestual relationship with Darcy.

    8. He has no friends or family that would come looking for him or ask his whereabouts - Darcy points this out to him during the confrontation where he gets shot. ("Nobody cares").

let's get the list going. I'm getting frusterated because David is still a two-dimensional character to me. He has no history. Only one dream flashback, all about Katchoo and Emma at his party (what was that party for again?). I want to know what happened to make him give up his old life. I want to know what happened between him and Darcy.

    Does David have any tattoos?

I think it was his graduation or something.

I wouldn't take what Darcy says at face value. For purely monitary reasons the Big 6 (which I think was disbanded at the time Sal was dethroned) would look for him, given Darcy's will.

And if she is alive Katchoo would come looking for him. Francine would as well. After the plane crash she was looking for them both.

I agree Jadian, while David isn't my favorite character, I would like to see more of his back story.

Given David's demeaner it is hard to picture him as a hood. Even given that we saw him react pretty instintively to kill that guy Veronica sic'd on him. That was extremely second nature. And yet it is still hard to picture him killing.

Yeah, I think if we can have an issue where we actually muster up some sympathy for ol' Ready Freddie, then it is definitely time to find out more about David. He gives very little of himself away, though, so who knows what an issue about him would be like? We've gotten first person narrative from Katchoo and Francine, but none from David. Perhaps symbolic?

I have always felt that David and Darcey were half-siblings or step-siblings. David is very Asian looking, and Darcey is not.

And this is a problem? biggrin

Just kidding ya Jadian, I am well know for my disdain for the spineless wonder.....

I myself having lost a best friend to the siren call of Xtianity, can totally see David as a ruthless thug-the change in my friend was almost as vast. Anyhow, I had assumed that David's conversion was due to the murder charges-he said it was when he was at his lowest point, and so far, that's the lowest one ever to be hinted at.

As far as their descent, I have always thought Darcy and David were half Asian-Terry sometimes made Darcy look it in the eyes a bit, and given their name, their mother could have been caucasian, and children in mixed marriages often more closely resemble their mother(or so I have observed....)

The thing that sticks is that Terry did mention Yakuza, but their name is Chinese. I can think of no reason a Japanese gangster would have a Chinese name(Yakuza and the Triads don't get along very well...) Well, one theory I have is maybe his dad or grandfather changed his name during WWII to avoid goind to the Internment Camps, and made his name under Qin, so after the war, just kept it. However, it could just be a minor flub on Terry's part, not knowing that Qin is Chinese and that Chinese and Japanese gangtsters don't mix well. I am guessing that is the case, so I'll ignore it(he has gone on record saying Qin is pronounced 'kin' when it's really pronounced 'chin')

The fact that we have not had any first person narrative from David is symbollic-symbollic of the fact that David is a supporting character and SiP isn't about him-It's about Fran and Kat.

Isn't Qin an assumed name. Didn't the David in hospital issue have his real Japanese name on the cover? (iss 29?)

Did David *REALLY* have some kind of incestuous relationship with his siter? I have never heard that confirmed, and spineless wonder, or not, he doesn't seem like the type of guys to get sucked into *THAT* with *HER*.

Yes, that's kinda my point-Qin must have been assumed for some reason, cause his name is Yousaka Takahashi. If David and Darcy were really Chinese named Qin, the Yakuza wouldn't have anything to do with them-they are very nationalistic...

No, Gen, it has never been stated exactly 'Darcy had sex with David' but every indication is that is what happened-sometimes Terry doesn't say stuff out loud like that, I think maybe for the same reeason he uses old style squiggles and exclamation points in place of actual curses....

I think it would very much explain part of why he's so effe'd up. The vibe I got from their conversations was that Darcy was very protective of David-maybe due to an overbearing or abusive father(I can't imagine a hard-nosed criminal was happy to get a cream puff like David for a son).. This would explain David's gang days as an attempt to prove hmself, realizing he bit off WAAAAY more than he could chew, and Darcy all along trying to protect/take care of him.
We also have Francines's revelation that David had obviously bee abused just like Kat(where Kat didn't realize it until F. said it....) and I think that would definietly account for that as well.

And Veronica made some sort of comment along those lines as well.

And there was a moment (can't remember the issue, but I think it was just before Darcey shot David) when Darcey touched him in an overly familiar way, and he pushed her away. I wish I was at home; I'd look it up.

I don't think David was a willing participant in the Darcy matter. He may've even been too young to understand what she was doing to him or fight back with any success.

Yeah, definitely! Or two young and weak to defend himself against her. There are a lot of possible scenarios, none of them really pleasant.

His sexual abuse may explain why he gives so little of himself; familiarity equals pain.

Still, it would be nice to get a first person narrative. Would be nice to find out what goes on in David's head.
