i recentley aquired a bell & howell super 8 camera and am waiting for the film to arrive. however, when i put in the batteries to test it before the film got here, it would not switch on. is it common for these cameras to not turn on unless the film is put in it???????

Most cameras will work even without film in them, but that is not a universal rule.

I would try and see if either the power zoom or the automatic meter is working. If none of the three are working, then either the batteries are too weak, installed wrong, and there is something wrong with the camera.

Use the same kind of batteries, alkaline's seem to be the most popular.

Which Bell and Howell do you have?
