I'm a bit confused.
You hooked up your high-end 3-chip analog camera that was docked with a hi-8 INTO the DV camera analog input to check the quality of the DV recording ???

So your overall point is that the Digital analog to digital coversion works well, and that the analog stuff from the 90's is still real good quality.

One final test to do would be to take your betacam camera and record a live signal directly to the digital camcorder (even though it will only be in the composite mode) and see how that digital recording compares with the digital cameras recording capabilities.
