I've never had a single cartridge jam, and I've shot about 300 rolls in the last five years.
Maybe it's your camera, or some other factor, like humidity.
And I agree with what you said. Technically, S8 should have horrible registration problems, and be bouncing all over the place, but whatever simplistic designs they have come up with, compared to 16mm & 35mm cameras, it seems to work really well, because I'm surprised at how steady the footage I've shot on quality cameras is.

There is a wafer thin round plastic "disc" inside the Super-8 Cartridge that keeps the film from binding up against the inner Cartridge wall.

Should someone get lazy and not put that 2 cent part in a cartridge, that would definitely lead to jamming film.

    Question

Remember, that there is no real pressure plate, the film is "floating" in the gate at an average distance to the lens. Other films with other types of layers may result in other running conditions which may affect sharpness and even result in bouncing pictures because the layer affects the transport mechanism of the ancient cameras, that once were designed to run K40 stock.

Isn't there a little thing in the film gate that grabs the little sprocket holes on the film? Doesn't this secure the film so that it won't just float on the film gate? This brings me to another point, I just bought an old Bolex B8, for the hell of it...I hear about how the double 8 camera's pressure plate is better than the plastic one on a super 8 cartridge. I wonder how much this is an issue... Has anybody had any problems they think are related to this design (super 8 cartridge w/ plastic pressure plate)?
    Thanx-Chris
