    Question

Can anyone tell me how to "modify" a super 8 cartridge so that it can be backwound to shoot multiple exposures? Thanks.

The most common method was to use the EWA Backwinder...although you had to unload the camera cartridge in the dark, put it in the backwinder, then when you were done backwinding, put the cartridge back in the camera....sometimes the film would not register quite the same the second time through.

I have one, I don't know where it is.

Check E-Bay and do a search for EWA or EWA Backwinder....they should sell for less than $ 50.00.....But THEY HAVE TO COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS...there's this one step where you have to put a piece of tape over the spindle/hub...it can be a bit cumbersome.

Some cameras have the backwind/double exposure feature built in.

Single-8 made by fuji featured a whole new style of cartridge that enabled you to rewind the whole cartridge!

I don't know if the format, film or cameras still exist.

I believe the most you will be able to rewind the super-8 film cartridge is 300 frames, or a little more than 10 seconds at 24 fps.

If your Super-8 project is intended to be shown on video....definitely look into doing the effect in video post.

The Nikon R-10 and Nikon R-8 I think allowed you to film in reverse for up to 10 seconds and do multiple exposures.

    Anyone else have any recommendations?

    Alex,
I am working many times with double exposure and lap dissolves an get perfect results.
Before I had a Beaulieu 9008 which enables this technic in a rather easy way, I had a Agfa movexoom, which only allowed a fixed automatic lap dissolve, but no free double exposure.
To make double exposures, I used the EWA rewinder and it worked.
BUT NOTE: WITH SILENT CARDRIGES, WHICH ARE NOT DETERMINDED TO BE REWINDED, YOU CANNOT REWIND MORE THAN 90 FRAMES!!! IF YOU TRY TO REWIND MORE, THE FILM WILL JAM AND THE NOTCHES WILL BE DESTROYED!!!
The sound cardriges were designed to be rewinded and didn?t have this problems. Therefore the rewind option in Beaulieu cameras (6008/7008) ONLY works with sound cardriges. As the sound stock was discontinued, the Beaulieu 9008 was supplyed with a rewind option for silent cardriges: during the first exposure, you press a special bottom on the upper side of the camera and the cardrige drive won?t wind up the film. This exposured (up to 90) frames you can rewind afterwards, watching the frame counter and make the second exposure.
With the EWA rewinder, you have first to open the camera and put a piece of tape over the drive of the cardrige, then shooting the first exposure (without winding up the film), up to 90 frames. Then put the cardrige in the EWA rewinder (tape removed) and turn the bottom, watching it?s frame scale, return the cardtige to the camera and shoot for the second time. If you don?t have the possibility to open the camera in absolute darkness, you will loose 7 frames at the beginning and 7 frames at the end of the szene.
Note: Beaulieu 6008 and 7008 can be modifyed to the 9008 option. The 4008ZMII models, as far as I know, have this option, too, but not motorized.
    Pedro
