Gentlemen,
I have a concern. Yesterday, Monday, the 4th of November, I sent off my film to Posthouse in Atlanta to have it transfered to miniDV on a rank. I have but one forseeable problem. I do not own a miniDV camera or player to capture the project into my comptuer. I would prefer not buy a camera as I do not know if I would need it again after this project and after spending the money that I will on the transfer I'd like to avoid unecessary expenditures whenever possible. Does anyone know of a place, preferably in NYC, that rents simple miniDV cameras (with firewire) or players or does anyone know someone that owns one that I could rent from them? If I have no other choice I will purchase one, but as I said, I'd really prefer not to. As always, any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated and I patiently await your response(s).
thank you,

What you should think about doing is getting a DVCam deck. They are getting smaller and smaller--Plus Sony has a model that will Play/Record both NTSC and PAL. It will not convert however--So you can't output NTSC to the PAL record mode or vice versa.
Plus with a deck you will reduce wear on gear. The tape transports are more robust on a deck than a camera.
Good Luck

You may want to just go to an edit suite and have your film edited there. In NY you have plenty of places to choose from. Prices vary.
Since you'll also need to master your final project on something like Mini-DV or Beta-SP you'll also need to rent, buy or borrow when you finish.
You may get lucky and find a small suite that will charge what you might pay for a cheap-o Mini-DV camera.

There are most likely rental houses in the NYC area which will rent you camera, but the problem is the rental cameras are usually the high end cameras like the XL-1 and DVX100 which will rent for $150/day and up. Some rental houses rent small clamshell/walkman decks in the $50-75 range.
I finally broke down and bought a Canon ZR40 for $400. I mainly use it as a deck to feed my NLE, but it's also great for documenting shoots (I pull stills from the footage for my website), location scouting and home movie events that don't warrent film.
Good luck.

I have purchased a Canon ZR45MC miniDV camcorder for $349 (including shipping). As I said, I wanted to avoid any unecessary spending, but ultimately I'm sure that that is exactly what I would have ended up spending if I were to rent and re-rent a miniDV camera from somewhere, which, by the way, I couldn't find. Cinepost received my film today (thursday, november 6th) and I expect it back late next week. Thank you for all of your input.
