But then again, I don't know shit.
feel free to ask away, Im currently buildign a noose out of elastic bands at work so could do with something to do
btw the alcohol point was serious, a shoot i did back in october, eddie can vouch for this we spent more time drinking than anything else,
yeah I can.
I still havent had the tattoos removed.
Because I don't come on this forum to become innovative or more creative that's why!
I recommended the book because it would do a much better job of answering the huge list of questions you posted, and make you see that everyone has a different answers...
Why do I post on a filmmaking message board: to learn and be inspired? Not really. Most of the stuff I've learned has come from actually making films not talking about them, as well as watching films and reading books (the one a recommended in particular!)
Ideas behind concepts? Applying them, hence leading to creativity? Sounds like a jumble of words which basically says using other people's ideas to me! To be truly creative why not use some of your own ideas!
Fair enough someone may inspire you, but I said don't expect to become innovative or more creative from reading other people's original ideas! It kind of defeats the object!
Did I tell you not to ask questions? Did I say don't try to learn from others?
NO.
I said if you want to provoke a discussion then ask the questions that are most important to you, not just everything you can think of!

-I think part of the problem is that at low budget levels "the director" often does pretty much everything and get tied up as producers more than directors. Thats definatley my experience.
So you may end up with a film but it might be hardly "directed" at all.-
Amen! So true- That was my 2nd short in a nut shell!!!
The pubs close at 11:00?? That's not good at all!! At least we can banter till 2:00am- then hit the 24-Dinner for coffee and Cig's-
I Like to Direct: I love working with talent and and yanking a preformance out of them, but I can also DP - Behind the lens is like painting a picture so fun- But after my last project- I don't care to wear both hats on a production anymore, way to stressful!

Wouldn't it make a very interesting book - Student/Guerilla filmakers who comment in great length about the process
I would find it VERY interesting AND entertaining though, if the book was about obstacles and unexpected problems experienced by guerilla film-makers during movie productions. Injuries, blizzards, running from the cops; you know what I'm talking about
But giving away your secrets and explaining what is subtle, implied, or hidden in each shot doesn't rhyme very well with what I think is most important: To let the movie speak for itself.
You learn from WATCHING and MAKING movies.

Taking over 2 hours to put on a false beard in a cold street, whilst being harrassed by a drunk guy for 3 hours until we decided to go to the pub instead. He was lucky it was all being caught on CCTV, otherwise he would have ended up in the river.
I guess you had to be there.
Probably just as well in the end - the beard looked quite astonishingly bad.

What are some things concerning directing that you have learned from watching films?
One thing for me, is that when you're confident in your actors, and you have a scene of dialogue that really works and grabs the audience, that sometimes it's best not to cut to different shots or angels. To just let the actors do the work and let the scene run in one wide or maybe medium shot. Or maybe 2 different simple angels. But certainly nothing too dynamic.
For one thing, if the actors nailed it in the one shot, and you can't think of any reason to have to cut to something else, then just leave it alone. No need to interfere with distracting cuts. And letting it play out with no cuts, which would therefore be in real time, adds to the authenticity, and I do believe the audience picks up on that.
This often works with comedy.
I can't think of specifics, but I do believe some of Woody Allen and Wes Anderson's stuff is sometimes like this. And to an extent, Scorsese. I'm thinking of "How am I funny?" in Goodfellas, although, if my memeory is correct, that isnt just one shot, but I believe maybe just 3. But theyre simple static shots. And when I recall that scene, I always remember it seeing both Pesci and Liotta sitting at the table surrounded by their buddies, in what I guess I'd call a wide shot. I think there are brief closer cuts to Pesci and Liotta's face, but that's not what I think of when I think about that scene.
Now, you wouldn't know this from just watching the film, but it was mostly improvised. And I believe it was Pesci's idea. He wanted to do a scene like that.
But if theres anything to be learned from that, it's that it helps when you allow your actors to be free and give them room to improvise.
But the thing about improvising, is that it really can only work with one take. Unless you do simple inserts or you can find gaps of silence in the improvisation to fit in cutaways. Its almost impossible to edit together different takes of energetic improvised acting that will match perfectly.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, that is a truly chilling scene, and I'm pretty sure that Pesci directed it.Quote:

However, the scene with Maury in his wig shop is the funniest: After seeing the video 'Maury's wig's DON'T come off!' then his wig falls off after Jimmy shakes him once- with Liotta in hysterics in the background... genious!
