Ahhh.
You know you can have 4k with film too??
I would hardly call the Red forum a place for open and honest debate on the subject.
Look at Aaton's new 35mm camera called "Penelope". Very cool the data-mags are cutting edge.
good luck

happy days ...
http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/ult...c&f=410&t=6152
so where's my nagra and reel-to-reel tape? oh yeah. superceded by superior modern technology. (compact flash in fact)
my best mics however are 30 years old.
isn't it the same with picture? the glass doesn't need to change, but the recording format most definitely will ... and, is.
why aren't all films shot and projected in 70mm? it's a great, superior format, and it's film. bring back 70mm! bring back vinyl! bring back eight track! bring back the steam engine! bring back the hand crank! bring back charlie chaplin! yeah!
bring back great stories.

There are still musicians that will only record on analog tape.
I love my Nagra and despite the fact that I am not a sound recordist I love to go out and grab wild sound with it.
This is the dog-chasing-its-tail discussion.
Good thing it is here. Things were getting quiet.
Look at Aaton and see how they are doing the smartest move. They are making both cameras in one...
Good Luck

It doesn't make much sense any more to shoot on film these days as
1) if you do a DI then that is usually done on 2K which is not that much different from 1920x1080 HD, Out of the top 10 box office hits in 2006 only DaVinci code was shot and DI'd on 4K throughout
2) no matter how much effort you make into ensuring to make your 35mm look good, by the time your interpositive or /-negative print (which is already your second or third copy) enters the copy facility to run off the cinema prints the quality goes out of the window. Modern reproduction is geared for speedy reproduction at up to 1000m per minute. I always watch films in the first row and the quality of your average 35mm cinematic print in the past few years is appalling.
If you want to see the future go watch a film in the Odeon Guildford - digital 4K cinema. You'll never go back to film after that.
