In the end I found an Audio Technica ATR-25 going for around $20 with promising reviews and decided to give it a shot.

I haven't really had a chance to use it yet, but for the money I paid it seems pretty well built and the sound quality isn't too bad either. Obviously it isn't going to be as good as the ?100+ models, but for now it'll do me just fine. I just stick it on the end of a monopod using a hand-built shock mount.

I may, however, look into a more expensive model should I ever be in a financial position to do so. For the mean-time this film making can only be a hobby, what with college and everything.
