Miker, It is true that people in general could not tell from its' picture however for small world of expert of moviemaker can tell. it is clever way to do to have it marketable however, why do not you try buy a super 8mm camera thru ebay and play with and get to know it basic that way you might can feel something challenge because it is fun. Try it once before film is no longer use in the future. Jerome, deaf filmmaker and videomaker

sorry if i get it off the point aboout dvd thing.

i played a lot with super8 when i was art college.

i love film, it looks great projected. super8 is really warm, and i have fond memories of those 3 minute cartridges ...

but on dvd, no one cares if it originated on film or video.

at my level of film making, there's to much to worry about and too much to lose if i choose film. i have to be realistic.

video is far more practical to use and have a professional looking result at the end of it using minimum resources and favours.

if i shoot film i have to organise a whole lot more, and my splicing ***** .

if i shoot on DV i now have everything i need, from my idea's inception through to getting the dvd on the shelf, and i can do it all cheaply and with minimum of fuss. that is true independent filmmaking.

um....what is field order? Also I was told one time to record in frames per second instead of fields per second...On my camera if I record in fframes it records for about two seconds then goes back to standby. The manual says that frame mode is to capture a progressive movement. It says you use frame mode if you want a jumpy affect. Record then when it goes back to standby, move the camera a little then record again, and continue in this manner. Am I missing something here? That doesnt strike me as easy, in fact it strikes me as ridiculous if this is what I have to do to get a good edit and medium transfer.

not all cameras support progressive scan mode.

it sounds like your camera's frame mode is actually some sort of stop-motion thing, where is takes a few frames at a time ???

field order can probably be best explained by someone else, but i just remember this (for PAL, obviosuly similar for NTSC):

video is generally shot at 50 fields per second, i guess that has something to do with 50Hz.

two fields are interlaced to make a 'frame'

that is why you can press pause on your VCR during a fast movement and sometimes you will see strange flicker on the screen (probably not so much with newer vcr's though since they digitise a single field or interpolate two fields to avoid the flicker ...)

setting your camera to progressive scan mode shoots a single frame at 25fps, rather than, effectively, 50f(ields)ps. it does not do this by throwing a field away, it does this at CCD level (i think) by doing what is implied: progressively scanning rather than interlacing.

trust me. use frames, not fields.

    interlaced:
    interlaced

    deinterlaced (or progressive):
    interpolation
