old saying, to be a succesful small business you have got to think big business which i beleive strongly refers to film as well

So, if your film has no budget, then where do you get your tape/film from? Steal it?

And to say it is no-budget de-values your skill as a film-maker, surely your time is worth *something* ???

So, say I make a true zero-no-budget film (material and logistics etc) I can still say it cost me ?1,000,000 if that's what I rate my time at.

No-budget is a fairy-tale, unless you're a six year old hose-piping with his dad's camcorder.

How do you suggest i edit for free (DV)?
(i'm not in the uk nor us).

Hang on... are people taking the mick out of non-budget films here?

Just because you have that amount of money to spend on a film doesn't mean EVERYONE else should.

"De-value yourself"... listen 'mate'... if you have a big budget it's easier to make a film... one the resoures are right in frount of you and TWO you can hire a crew and make that do it for you. It is MUCH harder to make a film with no-budget which makes you CARE about each shot more... and not worrying about when the budget's gonna run out.

And plus, you sound like your in it just for the money ("value my time at"). We make films which we CARE about and put a lot of effort into it to make it good which is what a REAL film maker is... not someone who points the camera, shoots and waits for the pay check at the end of the day!

You should be ashamed of yourself. Call yourself a film maker? Huh...

firstly read my reply to random bobs other topic "Do Not Pay", im am most definetly not in this for the money . the reason iam here is i believe that if you want to do something in life you should just go out there and do it, 5YLAC films started in september 1999 on this basis so far we have made 3 films, and there are over 30 commited talented people involvwed all prepared to work for free.

Mortus Illumina which is the film im making at the mo , yes the one with the ?10'000 budget. is going to be a big showcase for myself and for everyone else involved in it, also it is going to be a truly independant british film. if you wonder where i am, getting the budget from , well its all coming out of my own pocket and i have worked damm hard to do that.

i have also worked damm hard to get my cast and crew together and still working damm hard to fill the final pieces. also i have spent a great deal of time on the shot list, visualistation, costume design etc etc i have two folders both 120 pages each of production notes thats ie thats 240 pages of notes on the production basicly not including schedule, diagrams etc , project plan and scriptboards. also every week i have at least one meeting with my production crew plus for the last 3 weeks i have been also rehearsing my actors plus doing technical rehearsals with my cinematography crew.

at the moment there are over 30 people involved in this production, some working in the industry paid, and others with a hell of a lot of talent and some with key enthusiasm
all there for the common good of getting this film made, and i belive that is because they have the faith in 5YLAC films the company i have built up but more importantly they have faith in each other, also we have all rady proven the talents behind some of the crew and a good 60% of them have worked with each other before on other 5YLAC productions

in terms of the visualisation behind mortus illumina,my shot list i have backed up with framing diagrams, camera movement diagrams, set up diagrams and visualisation diargams. plus iam also filimng my rehearsals and blocking plus creating photoshop images and short video clips to get it across.

basicly this film has taken up every spare moment i have and dont have.

if you want to know what my time is like i run two business on the side of the film an IT consultancy company is one of them which is how i spend at least 40 hours of my week doing, plus on the film side im producing directing a music viedeo for Sub Funk Records plus also producing Miker of this boards pilot sitcom "Helpdesk"

in terms of a filmaker, on the last shoot of deadlights we went over schedule unplanned but everyone was so hyped up and enjjoyed what they were doing we managed to pull of a 42 hour shoot in a weekend, also i managed to blow up a building next for nothing with great results plus managed to create a battle scene for a few hundred quid. thats the producing side

on the directing side, i work myu actors hard im a great believer in method acti8ng and solaski on a low budget i might not have the best actors availiable but im making them get the input and what i had to work with in deadlights i believe i pushe dot its limit, this time round have spenty trhe timer and the blaggin to get a lot higher quality involved and i know it is going to come across in the film. also cinematography wise directing i know im getting the framing and the shots in fine, also the whole point of film simply is to tell a story, whether that be making a point, or eneterntaing or as the beeb put it "entertain, inform and educate" which believe me i know iam doing

ill be honest with you my weakness at the moment is cut points but hence you dont know these thigns to you tryand i klnow for a fact in Mortus illumina im going to knock that on the head

also i have spent many a hour working out the structure for my film, as i believe this is wher emost modern filmsa re lackiong, and i have worked out everythign from the beat of the dialouge in ceratin scenes to the lens size all to create the final image

so calling myself a film maker ? , yes I am
and iam 110% confident in calling myslef that, and do i care ? f*cking hell of course i care this is why my whole life is dedicated to it,and from that i have got the big crew and the great cast, plus worked to get the budget. i live on four hours sleep a night an giving up most of my time to the film so dont say i dont care about my films.

and about my films, i reckon i have something unique in my talent, its going to take me several films to get a definate defintition to it, but thats that whole thing called life.

you say i should be ashamed to call myself a filmmaker well pardon the expresiion but f*ck you. i wanted to make films and god damm iam doing that
