i found that talking with the actors about the characters past, feelings, etc - before i decided what parts they were goin to have - let me see who they really are, if they sutied the part and if i could work with them... its called type casting

if they are female demand sex from them!

Actors and musicians are as a rule quasi-socieopaths.

They have grand and talented vision but need to have their cage rattled on a regulair basis to stay on track.

Then again don't we all.

The problem is that as with most creative people; you can think of more in a day than you can do in ten years.

Film as a rule depicts extremes of emotion.

The shoot out; The fist fight; The grand and sweaty love scene.

Sweaty......

Anyway. Someone may look the part but can they conjure up that level of emotional force at will and repeatedly.

Sweating....

I'm better really I am.

Breathing......

"Crap I forgot."

i think it goes something like, "I think that person would be really good in my movie", so you call them and ask if they'll do it.

once you've worked through your list of knowns, you then have a series of auditions to cast for unknowns, or take a risk on word-of-mouth

the auditions for my sit-com were in part broadcast for the *living channel's 'talent' strand earlier this year.

Make it absolutley clear from the offset the amount of work that will be involved, and the amount of commitment you want from them.
Get rid of anyone who cant make the commitment you ask. The last thing you want is people to drop out.

Do a script reading on video with a blank background. This will give you an idea of how comfortable they are with the camera and if they have any screen presence.

Ask them to hop around on one leg for a while and pull faces. That will tell you if they have a sense of humour, and also let you know how obedient they are.

Dont take it too seriously.

Be nice to everyone and make them cups of tea.

I have had experience with film casting and there is of course one golden rule: do they look good on camera? set up a camera and ask them to sit/stan etc in front of it..do close ups..how do they respond to the camera movement? A theatre actor and a film actor are two different things (or people)

Thanks thats some quality advice. I will make them hop on one leg and make them nice tea. Sounds silly, but yeah I guess ya need to know if people are fun too.
