    Never mind.

If you want to use SFX in your film, use it, but that doesn't mean it will be great. Films are made to tell stories, not to make us brainless drooling dummies.

Besides, liek I said, they haven't abandoned Special Effects, just the use of them in post-production.

Watch "The Idiots", Despin, you'd be amazed how good it looks, sounds and is.

that's awesome that they can make good movies without all the sfx and stuff, but like despin said film is a visual medium. And if you want to go to all the trouble of making a film like that, then that is your deal. I'm not going to sit here and try to convince you that dogma is stupid. But in my opinion it seems that is more work than need be. I mean it's like artist could say "hey i think i am going to go back and scratch on some cave walls because i want my art to be pure" sounds pretty chuffen stupid doesn't it?

I just don't see the point in not using tools that allow you to tell a story better.

And who says that Dogme isn't beautiful visually? Have you ever actually seen a Dogme film?

And about that comment of art... If Dogme would be the Mona Lisa, what you suggested is that we would clone Leonardo to modern day and let him change the way we remember Mona Lisa.

although i do like the idea of the dogme manifesto, i kinda think these comments about keeping the 'purity' of film is pretentious **** ...
we are talking about film after all, and not religion...
personally i reckon, sfx are an extension of the film-making form, and is just as important as all the other things that weren't available when filming first began (colour, sound, etc)... although effects are often used to pull in the punters for an otherwise rubbish film, they can also be put to excellent use (amelie - my favourite film of last year - wouldn't have been possible without sfx)...
limitations on what you can and cannot do when making a film can reap excellent results (el mariachi limited bythe money, rope limited to one house set, etc) however, sticking mindlessly to set limitations without considering each story/film individualy first is stupid...

    Beuford C Constantinople.

p.s. film-making isn't an art. although there are/were great artists within the industry (kubrick & kurosawa for example), the majority of directors are mearly entertainers... that's just my opinion though.

Although film is a visual medium, and sticking by dogme rules tends to result in a poor image, film making isnt just about visuals.
Its about performances, locations, style, story progression...and all the rest.
If you want gorgeous images watch Attack of the Clones.
I think producing with DOGME rules in mind can get incredible performances out of actors which wouldnt be possible if using traditional production techniques.
Also the documentary style that results can pull you into the story more effectivley than otherwise.
Personally I think Festen is one of the best films Ive ever seen, although like Despin says, the picture quality is awful, but then thats partly the point, since it almost has the effect of watching a home movie - making the story more personal.
    Only my opinions.

Okay, this is ridiculous. s-u-c-k is censored in the above post. This word has other meanings than just a derogatory one.
But even when used as slang, like above - so what? Is it that harmful?
