is anyone else on this board put off by the fact that filmmaking is just a buissness?

i watched 'Bruce Almighty' a couple of days ago and it pissed me off that the makers of this movie cared more about the ammount of money the film made than the quality of the film.

call me a liar if you want but making money is not the reason why i'm interested in films. i would rather make a film like Donnie Darko which is a great film that got critical success but took very little at the box office than make a piece of **** like the Fast and The Furious 2 that will make millions.

You think the company that put a whole bunch of money into Donnie Darko could do that in they didnt also make movies like Charlies Angels 2 that makes 100+ million.

I think you can have one without the other.
Titanic (I know people hated it but I thought it was very good)
Terminator 2(Ok action flick.. but one of the best)
American Beauty (Wasn't low budget)

Good films don't just have to be low budget indy film.
I do agree that film makers care too much about the money they are gonna make and not the quality of the film but in all fairness.. The film industry is a Business.. and Businesses have to make money.

Hollywood studios ARE businesses. They make films to make money - the budgets of most of these films are so huge that for the film to make its money back the studio must sell tickets, LOTS of tickets - every man, woman, child and their dog has to see it. This means that tried and tested formulas must be employed to remove any element of risk from the investment.

However, despite this, there are maybe 1 or 2 Hollywood films made a year that are classics - materpieces that will be remembered. Out of the hundreds that they make that is a fairly small percentage - but is also true in every field (not just film).

But, there is much more to the world of film than just Hollywood - although many people are oblivious to this fact. Take a visit to your local multiplex and it's easy to see why.

If you are interested in seeing non-mainstream films you will need to look a little harder - open your eyes (and mind) to the world of independent, art-house, and foreign language films - I think you will like what you see.

Due to the fact that less money is at stake, the makers of these films are able to take more risks, be more creative, unique and therefore make more interesting and original films than the average Hollywood fodder.
