Lower East Side vet Mike Rimbaud took the name of his new band from a set of cute cartoon signs that reminded '50s commuters not to smoke or spit.
But it?s that dingy, subterranean, through-the-grate kind of glow that informs his scruffy-voiced rock songs, invoking '70s Costello and Springsteen along with an improbable hint of Brazil (Kamenetz)

"LIGHT OF DAY: A TRIBUTE TO BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN" (Schoolhouse Records).
Some unpolished clunkers complicate this 37-track, two-disc tribute to the Boss, but the scope of it is nice. New folk singers (Mike Rimbaud),
old rock singers (Dion), and representatives of the new wave era (Elvis Costello, Graham Parker), neo-country (Joe Ely, Rosie Flores) and so
forth bring their own perspectives to Mr. Springsteen's best songs.

Let's go underground...
You?re in a tunnel and there's no escape. That screeching noise you hear is no train; it's music. You feel upside-down, going downtown, but don't look into the light! You get off when it's time to change. Be careful leaning over the edge, if the third rail don't get you, that groove will. It's coming at you, fast on a local line. You don't need a metro card, because you just hopped the turnstile. You?re weary of the same old platform, you?re tired of that police state of mind! But suddenly you understand the voice from the service speakers, and that melody, it's rockin' The next stop has a new rhythm, the strangers sitting across from you start looking good and might join you in a mutiny. Hold on straphanger, it's a new dawn, because these are the sounds of the SUBWAY SUN!

SUBWAY SUN DEALS WITH LOVE AT ARLENE'S GROCERY
by Ernest Barteldes
The New York Press
Mike Rimbaud is an East Village musician who,
alongside his band, The Subway Sun, has been playing
in the city for quite a few years. His sound is like a
folk musician gone electric, which can be evidenced by
his latest single, Deal With Love, that will
officially be released at Arlene's Grocery on January
8th.
The song began life as a bossa nova-inspired tune(full
disclosure: I was present at that initial session and
at a rehearsal a few weeks after that), but later
Rimbaud took it another direction and turned into an
an all-out rock song. "I knew I was onto something
when the song was coming together", he told me on an
e-mail interview."It's different from anything I've
recorded before. It lifts you up like the best rock
can."
During the past year Rimbaud participated in several
projects. The highlight, in his own words, was "The
Light of Day", a Bruce Springsteen tribute album and
concert that took him to Asbury Park for a benefit
concert that featured, among others, the leader of the
E Street band: "Playing at the Stone Pony at the
concert tribute was unbelievable and was one of the
best times I ever had on stage", he says. "I actually
got to meet 'the Boss' himself back stage and sang
back up for him with Garland Jeffries during the grand
finale version of Twist and Shout."
For 2004 Rimbaud plans to release a full Subway Sun
album and take his sound to the broadest audience
possible. "I want the Subway Sun to have a hot rock n' roll sound -
warm and groovy with lots of spirit and
the kind of soul that we haven't heard much of since
maybe thirty years ago", he said. "At the same time
this band has a contemporary edge that can only come
from the experience of living in New York City today.
I want to make a rock sound that that has a powerful
energy, one that can lift up anyone, much like the
best rock n' roll from that Golden era."
