Is anyone interested in putting a portfolio of Vinnie's playing together covering his development from Zappa to ...?
After reading all those interviews from his webstie, I thought of this. I'd love to have a CD (80 mins) that represents the man.
Maybe we could come up with ten tunes that represent his playing, from '78-05. Any takers?
I don't feel qualified to do this compared with many of you here in HOD.

That sounds like a great idea to me. Of course this is near impossible to do with 10 tunes, I think any "best of Vinnie" compilation would be great though. Like you, I don't believe I have heard enough of his playing to do a great job on this.

Nice idea PP, it would be hard to get just ten song but i get the idea you were after. ive been thinking about something like this for weckl--early year, mid years, later years. for vinnie it would have to start with zappa, include joni mitchell, holdsworth, and some of his lesser known stuido sessions representing his tame side.

Don't forget to throw in some Megadeth
That would certainly highlight his versatility!

it's nearly impossible for me to even start at the beginning! a zappa tune! there are SOOOO many good ones. some may think the obvious choice is 'keep it greasy' (but thats a long tune) it'll take up a lot of the valuable space on an 80 minute cd! maybe we should start there and try to 'iron out' song #1 from zappa. then build from there.
my vote;
'variations on the carlos santana secret chord progressions' (3:56)

My votes:
From Zappa Years: "Five-Five-Five", off Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar
From Joni Mitchell Years: "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care", off Wild Things Run Fast
From Holdsworth: Both City Nights/Secrets
From Sting:
Fields of Gold (Showcasing his time/restraint)
Seven Days (of course), all off Ten Summoner's Tales
Fill Her Up (Off Brand New Day, the ending is classic, unbridled Vinnie)
Tons of others as well....

Good reply Benny! After I made this thread, it occured that most of the great songs Vinnie has done have been discussed at length over the years here at HOD.
BUT...I was after a history of Vinnie--drumming that represents his evolution which might not include the more well known tunes. One would probably have to start with Frank, but few would include a tune from Wang Chung or Nik Kershaw. I know there are so many, but this is what we have here at HOD...a vast resource of knowledge and opinions.
There's a tune off Tom Scott's "Desire"--it's either Stride or Chunk O Funk where a young Vinnie does this 16th note fill on his hats during a break. I remember my drum teacher (who rarely gave props to anyone) around '85 playing that tune for me, and that fill, over and over. There was something about that tune that grabbed him, possibly representing a new idea at the time.
This was my first introduction to the drumming of VC.

I would say OCOE from the Pages cd, then something from Nightwalker and Tom Scott's Desire disc.
Definetly something from the Bill Meyers cd.

That's a good idea. I reckon it should be done later on in the player's careers to do them any real justice. Maybe we have a new idea for a record label - "Portfolio Records"?
Maybe we could do career records (probably 2cds each!).
People like
Gene Krupa
Louie Belson
Gadd
Buddy
Big Sid
Gary Chester
Gruber
Elvin
Max
Art Blakey
all the classic guys. I guess we could do it for other musicians too, like guitarists. Quite fun.

Heck, the entire first disc of SUNPYG!: Ditto, NO DOUBT: 5-5-5!, Hog Heaven, SUNPYG, While You Were Out, Heavy Duty Judy, Soap 'N' Old Clothes, Treacherous Cretins].
_Disc 2: Yeah, Variations, of course; Gee, I Like Your Pants, Canarsie, Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar Some More
_Disc 3: Beat It With Your Fist, Return Of The Son Of Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar, Stucco Homes.
...Now if there was just a way to get a copy of it sans some of those often annoying, scratchy, rambling lead gtr tracks! I know, heresy, you might say...
The critics up until this release wanted him to stop singing & play more guitar...this album was enough for me...OK, now, "Stop Shuttin' Up 'n Put DOWN Yer Guitar!" 'n back to writing the music & those witty, dry, sarcastic lyrics...'cuz yer cra**ing all over the great drum & bass playing!
DEF some of the Bill Meyers stuff; the stuff w Stern, Billy Childs...
_Eric Marienthal, Crossroads - Spoons, Upside Down.
_Patitucci's first solo disc - Growing, Change of Seasons, Crestline.
_Vinnie's first [& only, so far!] solo disc - choose from: Chauncey [the way it goes from 5/4 back to 4/4 is awesome], Slink, or Bruce Lee.
_Something off Jeff Beal's 3 Graces. [Both Vinnie & Weckl are absolutely brilliant on this album.]
A RARE track off pianist AWA Berklee alumni Suzanne Dean's only album [to my knowledge] - "Dreams Come True," track 1: Rhythm River. Predominantly in 6/8, like some of the JBeal stuff. I just have to figure a way to get it from vinyl to mp3...for one, my "power-amp" [receiver, really] is not strong enough to handle the turntable I have...& before the PA that was in the garage was sold [before I thought of it].
Like the music or not, the track wouldn't be the same w/out Vinnie's rhythmic, groovy brilliance on the kit.
Guess that's quite enough for now....
