Very slick, didn't like the BD sound/mix too much, too heavy for a group with vibes, IMO.

I love the fill, I think it's the only tom fill in the track.

    Glad you dig it, guys.

Steve is SO tasty and with a
real bag of tricks. He is one
of the top players out there,
    right now, in my opinion.

    This cut is from Christos
    Rafalides' Manhatten Vibes.
    It's monstrous and a must-
    have for drummers.

And he is as personally wond-
erful too, which is so rare!

Good find Pete.... I'm gonna go buy this now.

And pocket.... you are correct about Steve. Returned an e-mail to me the other day. A very cordial and diplomatic dood. Can't wait to see him with Scofield.

PS... Not to highjack the thread, But Weckl and Co and playing next week at Catalina's in Hollywood.

    Ouch!
Thanks PeterC, I haven't heard that in about a year.

I love the drum sound as well as the playing. I actually love the hugeness of the kick drum. You can hear the drums for a change!

A great mixing engineer is one who can give each instrument it's own space, without clutter, and without instruments getting in each other range. This was accompished with expertise here.

Like on Led Zeppelin's albums and Rush albums where the drums are huge sounding and you can hear every instrument. The drums are loud on this track. They don't get in the way though. I can hear every note from every instrument. I like the mix. The whole album is this way, and it sounds awesome. The carriage house is a great studio, responsible for many great CD's including Michel Camilo and Beyonce.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not to be contrary, but that was my problem -- the mix seemed wrong -- drums too far in front, I think. It made the drums sound like they are coming off a different song, or something -- awkward to me.

    Great drummer, of course.

Christos is also a drummer, which would explain his appreciation for Steve and of course the balance of the drums in the mix...sounds good- though...the kick is a little high in the mix(except during vibes solo), and generally if it draws attention to itself, that's not preferable...

I certainly respect others' opinions -- the mix sounds off to me.

Hey Peter, was that from the album with Randy Brecker and the song "Flamingo Strut"?
