DIdn't see "Syncopation" mentioned. This one was pretty good to me. Playing it through with right hand lead works well.

It's been too long since I've picked one of those books up.

Stick Control is the best way to go for hands. Peter Erskine's new "Drum Set Essentials" is a GREAT book for beginning drummers.

I take exception to the mention of the Top 25 classic drum text Syncopation as being a useful book for students.

I'd like the book if there weren't bass drum quarter notes written under the patterns. It allows students to use the note's visual placement rather than each note's value to place the notes. The bass drum functions as a grid, notes that line up with a BD note are on the beat and those between them are on the &. In other words, it undermines their reading development by allowing them to consciously or unconciously cheat. I've seen lots of students who've worked out of that book who can't read simple rhythms without those BD cue notes.

Modern Text Reading by Gil Breines and Louis Bellson is similar without the bass drum notes. Good luck,

    Brad

    Hey Danny
I just got another copy of Stick Control for the holidays...you can have it. Maybe at the next gig?

ALso...I just had a blast on my buddy's Roland V-Kit with the TD 10 module. One selection allows you to play along with a bass player triggered to the kick.

It got me thinking...any recommendations for play along CD's? How about a company name I can research.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">IIRC you can also have a horn section "bound" to one of the cymbals ("bigband" lets you have both I believe). Quite fun to play with (I spend too much time on my local Guitar Center's V-kit).

    Hey everyone,

I gave my lesson last night and it went great! I ended up getting Stick Control and this small book called The Drum Dictionary. The 1 hour lesson extended to 1 1/2 hours and we could have kept going. But the 1st 30 minutes were spent on grip, balance, and bounce control, so we didn't even get to any of the exercises!

Thanks for all the great input!

    Danny
