Hey Paul, welcome to you mate, you'll have fun here. It's like the Wizard of Oz: there are many colourful characters, some who are brainy, some not so, some are cowardly, some have big hearts, some are truly evil and some, you can't understand a bloody word they say!!

Anyway... Invitation!! What an amazing album and definitely one of my favourites. The arrangements are fantastic, and the harmonies and voicings are just beautiful. Did Jaco do all the arrangements himself? I love the parts where it all breaks down and goes free too, so organic and so typically Jaco.

Peter's playing is as always so musical and he sets up the phrases beautifully (like the cheeky little snare & BD fill in the last head of The Chicken after the first phrase!) You never know Paul, if you hang around, Erskoman may comment on the album himself and even regail us with some stories?!?!!

As for my favourites, I love Liberty City: The way it builds is just staggering and I love the unison bass & tuba line!

Have you heard The Birthday Concert? It's ridiculous!! Brecker & Mintzer are just silly and sound as if they are getting paid by the note - I'd hate to think what they were on at the time!!

Anyway, nice to see you and cheers for the reminder of this classic album.

Hi there Paul,

There are plenty of Jaco fans out here on this board I should imagine. I always think of what fun it is playing the 'Chicken' song. Great tunes, great player.

Thats even before you take into account the drummers he's played with. We are very lucky to have Peter Erskine here as an honoury member of the board. His contributions are very valuble, you can see for yourself. His username is Erskoman. Do a search for some posts of his...

Welcome aboard from a fellow UKer...

Hello mate, good to have you on board! I'm sure you know my thoughts on the great JP already. How's Donna Lee coming along?

Hey Dazz,
Yea! If you're talking about the bit that goes something like this below, then yea, that's the bit that I always love hearing erskoman play in that piece. Just perfect little thing to do and just at the right time.

I was noticing recently the groove on the Chicken and how the hat is so swung on there. It's a unique shuffle kind of groove that I thought about trying to get happening for Altered's version in 7 (not that I could come close to Master Erskine's feel on there obviously). We play it straight (as do most I suppose).

You're right Steve, it sort of sounds 'in between', like a lot of the old rock and roll gooves. Jailhouse Rock for example, is it straight or swung?

And how Peter keeps up those 16s with the RH all way through, I'll never know!
