This question is for anyone who knows:
After several years of listening and thoroughly enjoying Jazz/Rock/Fusion music, I would like some history on where the stuff comes from. Especially the timekeeping aspects demonstrated on Allan Holdsworth's stuff and even Vinnie's playing on 'Scophile'.
Thanks,
Clint

It kinda sounds like you're asking about the genre but want to know about drumming styles in particular.
Theres not much "timekeeping styles" like Vinnie's out there really. There is some stuff that is out there that has clearly infuenced Vinnie though. Mostly by Tony Williams. Check out Lifetime and Emergency!
As far as the genre itself...early stuff you may wanna check out is Miles Davis Bitches Brew, Chick Corea and Return To Forever, and Mahavishnu Orchestra.
I wouyld find listening to traditional jazz and bebop more enjoyable than older fusion which can sound very dated. Straight-ahead jazz on the other hand is timeless.

i have 3 words 4 you;tony williams lifetime! they are the first bonified fusion band.tony is soooo emulated in all the later fusion bands after lifetime.you should check out any frank zappa(vinnie is on joe's garage 1-2),that shit will mess with your head. tony's lifetime are volumes of recorded drum lessons.interestingly enough the first lifetime album(recorded when tony was just 16-just before he joined miles),is a bonified avant garde jazz album, and it is exceptional.if all you vinnie heads want to know who his biggest drum idol is .....it is tony

And going back further, you have Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Buddy Rich, Max Roach and others. What they do, did can be adapted to a modern situation.
