I know Gary Novak played with Alanis Morrissette, but I don't think he played on that recording. Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was another drummer (or drummers).

I know Gary very well, and once he told me about some recorded tracks with J. Patitucci and Billy Childs, but they still haven't see the lights. But if you don't know the C. Corea Electrick Band II "Paint the world" records, from 1994, you have to buy it immediately. It is one of the best records I ever heard, and Gary is killin' on it. The tracks are great, and the rest of the band is unbelievable. I saw them back in '94 here in Rome, and I can't tell you what.....

yeah I'm a fan of his playing too.
The Chick Corea TIME WARP cd is a must as well.
I lucked out and found a Japanese import video of them in the studio doing that CD. Its pretty good.
The takes on the video arent as good as the CD though.

Yeah, you're right Steve, Time Warp is another one that is killin' too. I have that video too, and I just forgot to mention it. In this video we can see Gary playin' on a drumset with a Yamaha bass drum and Gretsch toms. The 1st time I met him (he was with Bob Berg)I told him about this, and he started smilin' and offered me a beer!
The Bob Berg "Another Standard" cd it's great too, plus I have some interesting things of him with Brandon Fields, Lee Ritenour and Pat Kelley. Not to forget his works with Allan Holdsworth in the cd "16th men of tain". I saw him live twice with Allan and Dave Carpenter back in '97, and, again, I just can't tell you what...

The TIME WARP video can be bought directly from Chick Corea. Gary plays kinda straight ahead on the Holdsworth disc Sixteen men of tain cd.
He is on the Unplugged Morrisette disc and the Infatuated junkie cd too

I found this old thread talking about a video for the Chick Corea "Time Warp" album with Novak. I haven't been able to find this video on the web including Chick's site.

Does anyone know where I can order this from?

    Thanks!

I totally agree with everyone, Gary Novak is killing. I saw him at Ronnie Scotts last year with Bob Berg, Joe Locke and James Genus and he was truly amazing. So creative, musical and dynamic. He continues to astound me. He has come onto the scene with his own unique sound (I love the way he tunes his drums and the sound he gets out of the kit) and style. I really admire the fact that he is still relatively young and yet from the first time I saw him in 1994 with the second Chick Corea Electric Band, he has always had his own musical identity. That is something that I'm sure all of us drummers struggle with - finding our own voice on the instrument.

His technique is amazing. Check out the tiny little ghost notes (pp) he plays and the feathered bass drum work on straight ahead tunes. His singles are STUPID and yet his control is incredible. His use of dynamics is a lesson. Gary is a true musicician and not just a tasty drummer and whenever I have seen him live, he always LISTENS and phrases/comps accordingly.

At the end of last year after that band did Ronnies, they recorded an album, (which I'm sure would have been Bob Berg's last recording) with a fantastic British trumpeter called Gerard Presencer. It must be coming out fairly soon, so keep an eye out!
