ok i listened to the randy waldman cd "unreel" in detail today and while the album itself is very tasteful and music and solos are very nice indeed......i have NEVER heard anyone overplay as much as vinnie does on this record. its as if he recorded in a seperate room oblivious to what the rest of the band is doing. PERHAPS if it was a small acoustic free jazz group playing live.....then maybe he could be that busy....but its a full orchestra and big band and he goes out on such a limb!!! the licks themseleves have no relevance to the music and he does then while randy is doing a lovely piano solo.......what!!!!!!??? if he wants to do those licks maybe one every 16 bars or something.....but he is constantly fooling around......sure weckl can overplay too but never on a studio album with a big band.........very distatseful!!

this just puts me off vinnie even more!!!!

Try to look at it this way:

You don't like how much Vinnie plays. There are no rules however on how much is appropriate to play at any given time. (despite what MD tells you) It's all a matter of taste.

Case in point, I hate that album. I own it and never listen to it because I think the music is awful. (meaning, I don't like it) I have no problem with the amount of notes, I just don't like the ones that are played.

A couple of my friends LOVE this album and think it's one of the best ones Vinnie has played on. I couldn't disagree more.

Obviously, Waldman must have dug his playing on the Unreel album. I think Vinnie's playing is amazing on this disc. Of course if we all agreed on what constitutes good drumming, we'd all be striving to sound the same and we'd have nothing to discuss on this forum.

Exactly my point. I don't like the MUSIC on that album. I think Vinnie's playing is great. (is it EVER bad though?)

I'm sure Randy digs Vinnie's playing. I'm glad he uses him and I thought Wigged Out was exceptional, however, the old TV tunes are just lame IMO.

I haven't heard 'Unreel' [so I can't comment on it], but I have 'Wigged Out.'

There might be a lot of what some folks might deem 'overplay'g' on this 1, but if that's indeed what it is, I still think it rox. Evidently a lot of folks seem to prefer this 1 over 'Unreel[?]' Obviously, the guy who put the CD out [Randy Waldman] likes VC's brand of overplay'g himself, as he brought him back 4 2nds...

It's OK if u feel that way, Louie - u raise some good points which r food 4 thot indeed...

[PS - If'n youre gonna listen to overplayin, why not listen to the best at it! [img]wink.gif[/img] - I'd rather hear overplayin if it's from VC, DW, DC, VD, GN, or RG anyday...

Unreel is not that good, IMO. Wigged Out is killer. My big problem with Unreel is the drum sounds. His drums sound terrible. The drum sounds on wigged out are really organic, as if Vinnie is playing in the living room. I have not been generally fond of his drum sound lately (like on the A Custom video.) I don't know what the deal is. It also sounds lately as if his constant studio work has detracted from his chops. His playing is a little sloppier than normal. Obviously, I could be wrong about his not practicing. I don't hang out with him. But listen to the number of seemingly accidental rim-hits are evident on "Unreel."

Louie - u might wanna take your copy of 'Unreel' back & get 'Wigged Out' instead; if u can't do that, try to trade it w/ some1 who can give u a copy of 'WO'...

????i wasnt evaluating his playing alone i was saying the he overplayed compared to the big band/jazz that weckl has done.....thats all. If you listen to the GRP stuff its awesome. Big band drumming is not supposed to be over complicated.....supporting the band and accents is paramount
