I have a Dr. Beat and really like it. Unfortuately, it only has 8 user set tempos unlike the Tama Rhythm Watch which has 20. I haven't checked out the Yamaha one, but have heard good reviews on it.

I have had the same Tama RW since '95. It's a cool unit, but it has its limitations AFA quick & easy access to different beat patterns [knobs AOT(as opposed to) digital buttons] - but remember, this is the '95 model, & one would think that they've upgraded the model since then [you'd think that thay'd make them like digital calculators now, functionally speaking]. Nevertheless, the time is there, & it's a valuable tool nonetheless.

I also have the ddrum3 & Roland TD-10, which have very good loop & metronome capabitlies, which i often practice w when i get the chance.

If not for the e-drum brains, i would've def had a contemporary programmable DRUM MACHINE by now [& also prob a MIDI-capable e-keyb/synth, linked to, AW] with which to play along with...Vinnie, Dennis, Weckl, Virgil, Enzo, Gratton, AWA Jeff, Carlos, GBiss, JR, Curry, Mover, Brzezicki, Gould, et al - all these guys used/use this tool - it was/is integral in the evolution of their incredibly advanced rhythmic/musical development...you want to "sound like them" [at their level]? Then there's nothing like playing along to a programmed drum machine - you can do all your little metric-modulation tricks like a 16th L or R [a la Vin, Weck, Den, Virg, Gratton, Marco, Mangini, Biss, Mover], or polyrhythmic motifs, AWA odd-time; & you will know right where the time is AWA the subdivisions...your meter will become spot-on, regardless...in this contemporary world of the click/DMs/sequenced music accompaniment, don't waste your "time" on anything less than a good metronome [or better yet, the drum machine, if your budget permits at this time]...take a listen to Pedro G, Tombo, & the other great players in here who play along to sequenced tunes & hear how sharp their timing skills have become

[Edit]: Serg is right [directly below] - that is the major limitation of the TRW [the main one that i 4got to mention ]

    Hello fellow HODs

i've been recently entertaining the thought of buying a metronome to help me get the right tempo when starting a song live.

i think this is due to the fact that when playing live, the adrenaline factor keeps me from remembering the right tempo. i believe this inspirationg came from reading one of billy ward's article in MD about the need to have such a device when he had debates w/ joan osborne on where the tempo of the song should be. so he used the metronome as of kind of an arbitrator?

anywhoo can anyone recommend such a device?

    thanks!

I also have the tama click, although i like it a lot, it just goes up to 6 beats per bar, so if playing in 7 or 9 is a must, you might choose something else.

    When you say "reasonably priced?"

How much is the TAMA watch?

Frank, i believe you can pick one up @musiciansfriend.com for $89.00. that's cheaper than say the yamaha's 'rythm watch'? i believe midwestpercussion.com has great prices also.

Wow fellas, thanks for your valuable input. it seems like the TAMA one's been getting my attention. it seems reasonable in price compared to the yamaha's and the ddrums'. Like you said FuseU1, i believe their technology's improved since then. i think that the ddrum route sounds a little too elaborate for what i've been lookin for but i still appreciate the detailed write up. thanks also to the rest of you guys for your inputs as well!
