Drumometer

Ashamed to admit it but I finally relented and had a go on the drumometer.

I measured: Hand Singles and Doubles, Feet singles and doubles, right hand alone and left hand alone.

I am now very humble about technical abilities!

Anyone else been on one... Sweep I hear you gave it a bash recently?

Hmm, I'm rather annoyed at the drumometer coming over to the UK, there was even a "UK fastest drummer" competition a few months back. I though it was just a US fad, but its overhear now as well. [img]confused.gif[/img] I just think it sends the wrong message out about drumming...

Well here's the thing:

I actually agree with you to a large extent. I believe that a device which measures pure speed but takes no account of touch, control TIME, sound relaxation, creativity or musicality can be seen as focussing young impressionable minds on the pursuit of speed above all else.

However, I think it has use as a way of measuring your own progress over a period of time as does the metronome. In oreder to really advance your technical faciltiy it is of course absolutely necesary to focus on all the areas I listed above. I think it helps as a motivational tool for a more advanced player and can also inspire a young drummer to actually consider ways to improve their technique - an area which young and unschooled drummers (or other instrumentalists for that matter) often shy away from.

Just my opinion.

I am also treating it as a bit of fun - I can't see myself responding to a comment by a band member with something like:

"You don't know what you're talking about - I am BRILLIANT... I got 1200 singles in a minute an the drumometer. I am LORD of all drums BOW DOWN AND WORSHIP ME THIS..."

Yep, I had a go....... I was rubbish. It was funny.....

If its in front of you and there are some sticks at hand...... are people really saying they wouldn't have a go?

Actually I had to be pressured into it a little. I had avoided it in the past but was 'persuaded' to give it a try.

I think we all know why we ended up on the drumometer, and there is nothing we could have said to get out of it. That Mr H. I had a play on it as well... the shame. Whats worse, i kind of enjoyed it! And your right, if it was on the table infront of me and no one else was around, id be straight on it. :-)
