I know that Steve Smith wears the dance shoes, because he does the "continuous return" method, where your foot is continuously moving through the pedal, bring the beater off the head so it can resonate, instead of burying the beater (Simon does this as well). This is like Moeller for the feet. So, his foot kind of slides/bounces off the pedal, getting a double hit from one doward/upward motion of his leg.

As for Neil, I guess he just likes the dance shoes, because he buries the beater into the head when he plays.

Of course, we could just wear black work boots, like Vinnie wore on MD 2000 video, and still have killer single foot action! [img]wink.gif[/img]

i have a gone thru a lot of different shoes throughout the years. i am with peter c here, indoor soccer shoes are just the perfect shoe for me (thin dance / weckle-type shooes were just too thin for everything). i have the sambas' right now, probably order the milleniums online sometime soon:

Thank you to everyone for all the great advice. Yeah, I noticed Vinnie on the MD vid, playing in chunky black shoes. I guess he's so good, he can play in anything - I bet even those huge shoes clowns wear in the circus - now THAT would be a gig worth watching!
I reckon I'll try the light weight trainers (sorry, sneakers) for a few weeks, see if they help my playing.
Oh, I don't suppose anyone knows where I can get some good groove transcriptions from the net. I've been on Tommy Igoe's feature on the Vic Firth site but am still looking for more, ecspecially some funky new orleans second line - been listening to Jon Cleary a lot recently!

Regarding footwear, I prefer socked feet...
I've seen Weckl using "Otomix" shoes recently, as well as Joel Rosenblatt. A lot of guys seem to be wearing these. Google them for more info!

Hello people,

Another tecchy quesion! I was wondering what all you guys reccommend for footwear when playing the drums. I currently play with just socks on and am learning to develop my bass drum foot by working through Colin Bailey's book. Prblem is, I can't seem to be able to get a lot of power on the kit as opposed to playing on my practice kit at a low volumes.
So what do you think about footwear. I know some guys swear by dancing shoes (Peart, Weckl) and yet some guys can still whip out intricate and speedy moves whilst wearing big leather boots! (Andy Gangadeen etc)

I wore sneakers mostly during the developmental years. I don't think it has that much of an effect really if you can play well with your feet to begin with. Unless it's something signifigantly heavier like boots or something.
