I don't understand that really. ALthough I've never heard Tony ON his DW's. I wonder how they sounded....

I saw Tony a few months before he passed away on a clinic tour. On the same tour a couple weeks before he was performing a clinic in Florida and he and the DW rep got into it. Tony wasn't happy with some of the specs of the equipment he was provived with and he let it be known to the rep, and from talking to a buddy who was there it sounded like "Your drums are shit"... Tony said it not I. He wasn't too happy with them or at least the help DW was giving him. I don't think he was too happy on that clinic tour, he seemed to be kinda going through the motions. It was too bad because i would have liked to have had a better personal impression of him and not have the only time when i got to see him be a time when he didn't even want to be there. It doesn't change how i feel about Tony, genius.

Scott Garrison worked for Tony as a tech and Tony asked him to keep him up to speed with all the latest gear, electronic and acoustic. Scott tells his story in a sidebar in the Tribute To Tony issue of Modern Drummer (Aug 97) and he says he turned Tony on to DW. In the Gretsch Drums book (by Chet Falzerano) the Grestch family said they were stunned to see the TW on DW ad campaign in Modern Drummer, ending a 35 year association.

Yes, the DWs are on Wilderness and even pictured on the back of Young At Heart.

Thanx 4 the reply Peter&5/8.
I have a poor quality vid of Tony playing the yellow DW's.
I liked the sound he had with that kit.
Kinda had a bit more of a warmer'woody'sound to them.
The black dots were on both ends of the toms.
He was also using Zildian A's in the Vid.
But the vid didnt feature(which i would love to hear)his change to dbl.bass drums and more accent-type A's(he was apparently sporting 2 splash cymbals and a china.).
I have a feeling that DW aggressively solicits artists with some type of a "we will send you a DW kit with your specs.,so you can try our fantastic-wicked-quality blah-blah-blah product" spiel.
I know that Ronn Dunnet will attend shows with a battery of snares for artists to try.
In that Gretsch book there was mention that Tony was hard to please.He was a bit of a diva.
If i was a betting man,i reckon Tony would'ive gone back to Gretsch after they reinvented the product...........................miss u much Tony.............beats.

For years I, too, thought DW was buying the drummers, beats. I played every brand I could find (Sonor, Yamaha, Mapex, Premier, Tama, etc.) before I bought DWs. All I can say is the slightest tap on toms or bass will render a great sound (as well as cruel blows.) DW are the most effortless drums in the world to play.

Badly tuned drums no matter what brand will sound like crap. [img]graemlins/wilted.gif[/img]
