Isn't this tune just the best?

It was one of the first things I heard Vinnie play on as part of a Zildjian promo CD.

Been listening to it again for the first time in ages- what a wonderful, exciting seat-of-the-pants performance.

    Another timely reminder:

Vinnie is sensational... I am not!

Oh well (sigh)... back to the practice pad...

Spaceships is possibly my all time favorite Vinnie recording. I like it way better than Scophile (from the same disc). Spaceships is a clear example of Vinnie coming up with genius ideas and having the technique to pull them off. I think he rises to the occasion when other greats are around (Brecker and the like). Although who knows if they were even recording together.

Yes I did mean the first tune from Sketchbook. Sorry to be so vague!

I borrowed a Zildjian promo cd from my drum teacher when I was at school and it had a Dennis Chambers track a Weckl track and the Vinnie track was "Spaceships"

I loved that drumming back then even though I had no concept of what he was doing. Now I have a greater level of understanding I can really appreciate just how wonderful Vinnie's playing is on that tune - great suff.

Amazing drumming. He just burns through that entire song...

Still, my favorite Vinnie performance will always be "Comfort" from that movie soundtrack, which Steve posted on this site.

Spaceships definitely set a land mark in my playing and listening. Hail to the great Vince. At the same time I was also introduced to "Against The Clock" off the Allan Holdsworth "Wardenclyffe Tower" CD. I think I was moved more by this song though. The slow build up with the hand/foot was, and still is simply amazing. Any thoughts???

I bought "sketchbook" for about a dollar at a large garage sale. That's like my best buy in years!

If you dig acoustic tunes on Sketchbook, you'd love the first Doky Brothers CD. Chrish Minh Doky is an amazing double bass player, and Terry Line Carrington is just made for these tunes, i'll put some of the tunes up if i can find the album somewhere in my large collection

If this is the same as the tune by the same name from Patitucci's Sketchbook album, then, yes...another sterling example of [-to quote/paraphrase you-] "why Vinnie is Vinnie, & we are not"

    <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Uh..............YEAH! ATC totally smokes.

IMO though, the quintessential Vinnie recording (on a whole; not any particular track) is still Holdsworth's "Secrets". It's simply other-worldly.

"SECRETS" IS A MASTERPIECE. Only Vinnie can over play and make since and music out of it. Forever humbled.
