The Surf Ballroom would be a kickass place for Mike and/or Social D to play! I have been to Clear Lake several times for work and the last time I was there, I purchased a replica of the Valens/Holly/Bopper last show poster at the Surf. Cool stuff. Lots of history at the Surf. To answer your question, I live near Des Moines.
Iowa is its own little world, people are really nice there. I remember the classic "iowa wave" when your driving and you pass someone how everyone kinda gives you a little wave from their steering wheel, even if they dont know you.
Last time i was at the surf i saw some band called "Vic ferari" or something like that, they only played cover songs. Everyone from clear lake and surrounding towns seem to come out...it was like a huge ass party.
