when I lived in Virginia there was this case where the husband kicked his wifes ass while they were in this public park. and in the end he got off without any charges against him because way back in 1800 something, there was a law that allowed the husband to publicly beat or discipline his wife when it it was required. so this law was never abolished or stricken from the "law" so he walked scott free.
