stars
and there I was
in the Arabian desert
listening to prayers
I didn't know the names of,
there I was
in the middle of nowhere
waiting for chemical agents
to drop on me and eat me
from the inside out,
looking up in the night
at millions of stars, and
they knew more than I knew,
had shined down on men
that were great
and not so great,
and now they shined
down on me and I was
just a nobody
like you
but I had the
stars.

"That's crucially awesome," is what I said at the end of reading that piece. And so it is. Wow. Too good to not be read by everyone who ever walked outside at night or looked out a window at nightime. Wow. ***

I love you, too, darlings.

One of the cool things about stars. No matter how far from home you might be, there is always something that will be familiar.

they've also all looked down upon all of us at one time or another, so they're like familiar strangers
