Tyler had spent the night drinking, mostly vodka his favorite drink. He had had a little too much, and the last screwdriver had put him over the edge. He had decided to leave the party, and try to make it home in one piece. As he stumbled back home, through the cold, he paused for a minute to barf in the bushes. He couldn?t handle this life anymore. He felt drained all the time, more emotionally than physically, as though nothing that he did was worth his time of the effort that he put into it. And this fuckin place just made it worse. He didn?t ever feel as though he had many friends at college, and he hated too many people.

When he got to his room, he slid the key into the lock, and turned counter clockwise once, slowly. The room smelled like shit, pizza boxes were littered across the floor, and was colder than outside, because of the window that his roommate left open all day. In the background, Tyler could hear the strains of the Carmina Burana coming softly from his computer?s speakers. Tyler?s mind ignored all of the bad things that were going on, overruled by his need for sleep. He focused on the song, letting its melodies permeate his head, giving notion to dreams. He glided over to his bed, slipping off his shoes on the way, collapsed and passed out in one motion.

Eight hours later, Tyler was awakened by his roommate Billy, who was trying to enter the room quietly. He smelled of cigarettes, and had his girlfriend with him. She smelled of cigarettes as well. Tyler moaned, and thought that he would get up and take a long shower. A very long one.

But just then, he heard his IM chime on his computer. He moaned louder, and made it apparent to Billy that he had woken Tyler up. Billy was a year older than Tyler, but there was no doubt to anyone in the dorm who was in charge of this relationship and this room. Billy looked guilty, and Tyler looked away, not wanting to embarrass him any further in front of his girlfriend. He swirled his mouse around on the pad, turning on his computer?s screen, typed the screen saver password, ten letters long that no one would ever find out, and saw that a girl from home was online, trying to talk to him. He weighed in his mind, the shower versus talking to her.

As the hot water poured over Tyler?s body, he could feel it literally refreshing and revitalizing him. He was ready to do the same thing tonight. He could do it. It?s not hard to walk, and laugh, and smile, or any of that shit, he thought to himself. It just?it just gets tiring?
