going to war
so there I was, Cherry Point,
just come back from
six months in Japan,
and I was back at the Point
for who knew how long
en route to Saudi Arabia
where some nut in Iraq
was pulling some shit with Kuwait.
I called home and told my dad
what was up and that
I'd call him later on.
of course, word came down
the next morning to pack up
and meet at the hangar
ready to fly out.
on the flight, I imagined
all kinds of crazy stuff:
planes and helicopters unloading
troops with ready weapons into
the dark and unknown Arabian night,
firefights, explosions,
the whole bit.
it was daylight
when I arrived,
tents set up,
the ground flooded from rain,
volunteers being rounded up
to dig a bunker.
I found my tent, went inside,
talked to some of the guys
and began to settle in.

Christmas in Spain
was like any
other day except
I was going to a war
I didn't care about.
I wore a grey sweatshirt with
ROTA
SPAIN
in red letters on the front,
listened to a
live Motorhead tape, watched
IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE
which I hadn't seen before
all the way through
and which I wasn't
especially agreeing with,
and listened to a guy
moan about being away
from his wife and daughter.
and then it was over
and I was on my way
to war
again.

Thank you, Jones. I've heard of broadsides, but never got around to finding out what it was.

Crazy A, do you remember (or have you ever heard of) those double-sided poetry broadsides that the hipsters used to put out in the fifties and sixties? There'd be a poem on both sides, and usually the two were somehow vaguely related. It was sort of the literary equivalent of a 45rpm single. You should do that with these two.
As for the poems themselves, I think they're cool. They remind me of Frank O'Hara (if he'd writen about Saudi Arabia) or an edgier William Carlos Williams.
take care
