i wake up. the sun is coming through the window. i look over at the clock. 8am.

bit early, but i guess i could get up. she's already off having coffee or working. i just stay at home and read all day.

i get into the shower, and take a short, but warm-enough-to-wake-me-and-get-me-ready-for-the-day shower. i towel off and dress myself and walk into the kitchen, trying to find something that could be eaten for breakfast.

i get a piece of bread or two, toast them and then go over to the tv to watch my morning comics. it's a bit early for them, i usually don't get up till 10am.

flipping channels. cnn. breaking news, as usual. but the news-casters look really stressed out. more so than usual. i stay on cnn to see what's up.

"...catastrophe. this might well be the end of the united states. we are unsure how long our supplies will last us, a day, two or maybe three. but many people will die before we run out..."

    huh? run out? die? end?
my eyes open wide, but my emotions stay cold - they have been for a while now.

scrolling along the bottom of the screen:

"... water has come to an all-time low and will probably run out in the entire united states within the next few hours. only bottled water will be left to drink once all the wells have run dry, which will be within hours according to our specialists..."

drinking water running out? how can that be? wouldn't they have noticed before now? how could this have slipped by all the 'experts'?

i go over to the sink and turn on the water, not expecting anything to be different. but the flow of water is noticably slower. now that i think of it, my shower water didn't have as much pressure as usual. i'm starting to think that the news might be right. but why is this happening in the entire united states all at the same time?

i get out a glass and fill it with water and drink it. i realize how refreshing it is and how much i like drinking water. i get out a jug and turn on the faucet, filling it.

i run out of the front door, hoping against all reason that she has not left for work yet, but she has. of course.

it's a sunny day. no clouds, just sunshine. it's cold, but the sun warms my skin.

i go back inside and start filling the next jug with water, all the while the news casters are continuing their scare.

i drink another glass of water and pick up the phone. i call her cellphone. she picks it up.

    "hi honey."

    "hey."

    "have you heard yet?"

    "yeah, it's on npr."

    "where are you?"

"i'm still on the road. there's a back-up that's impossible to get out of. i guess the news broadcast this early this morning, like 6am, and everyone tried to rush to the grocery store to get bottled water. but now not a single car is moving either way."

    "wow, that sucks."

"yeah... i don't know how long it will take me to get out of here. but i'll come home as soon as i can - i called work, no one's coming in today."

"okay, i hope it won't take you too long. i'm filling up containers with water."

    "that's good. thank you."

    pause

    "i love you."

    "i love you too."

    pause

"i'll see you soon then, i guess."

"yeah... i'll call you again... bye."

    "bye."

i hang up the phone and feel more empty than before. i want her to be here with me. i want to touch her and hold her in my arms and never again let go. if this means we are to die, i want to die with her, in her arms. i just want her to be here, take the pain away of not being able to see her and feeling so numb right now.

i start filling all the glasses with water and put a piece of carboard on top of them to keep the dust from getting in.

slowly the tap water comes out less quickly. i cross my fingers that somehow this is reversible. i don't want to die yet. i still have plans and dreams i want to see happen.

    i hope. i wait.

i sit up in bed. the clock says 8:15am - my alarm is ringing. i get up and turn it off. my mouth is really really dry. i go into the kitchen and drinkg a glass of cold water. it feels like heaven going down my throat.

i stand in the kitchen realizing it was only a dream, hoping hoping that it was not one of those dreams that turns into a deja-vu ten years from now like so many others have.

    i hope.
