Cat

[dwim]

My cat sits in the shade
with gallant
uncaring
of the world about her
on television screen
she takes in nothing
and emits nothing
she hears the President talk
and she has no opinion
the President is nothing
but a fish to her

The cat tired of the shade
makes a stupendous jump
to top of the couch
and puts her nose on the window
she sees the squirrel climb a tree
she watches another cat walks by
then runs to the bedroom window
to watch the cat walk by some more
she swings her tail to and fro
just glad that she's not the mechanic
under the broken down car
across the street

The cat decides she's hungry
she goes to the bowl
and finishes off her food
decides that she's still hungry
and that the cat food box is due for taxes
she sticks her paw through the hole
hoping for one morsel of a bite
this fails so she knocks
the box down and sits on it
growling low in anger
at this whole unfair world
at the fact that she's a cat
and wouldn't know what to do
with a mouse if she caught it

The cat marks a spot in the shade
circling it some fifty times
until she loses count or
no longer cared
until the last ounce
of lazy energy is drained
then she lies down
on newspaper headlines that screams WAR
and dreams of chasing Ferlinghetti's dog.
