HUSH
Open-mouthed, the spirits of the deep await
vibrations through the silent sea. Cartographers
have imagined their bodies—swollen, ancient,
Sleek, scaled with bones and chitinous steel
Poseidon is an absence,
a great outward pressure
with tentacles;
His symbol is not a trident or a net
His symbol is not a trident or a net
Skeletons of aborted dolphins
eyeless, deformed,
wriggle and squeak across plazas
lost when ancient cities slid into the sea.
Slick, membranous flesh heaves against
drowned stone
Now, the earth:
a fissure
cold and more cold,
and even the blue whale prays.
Even the blue whale prays.
