An Orange Shoved in the Toe

Year after year the same
stocking--stuffed and overflowing
onto the floor beneath it.
Red with artificial fur along
the opening---and a bear's head
tackily glued to the front.
As you dug deeper the gifts
gave way to hershey's miniatures
and kisses. But beneath the sweets
weighing the whole stocking down
there was always a solitary
orange shoved into the toe
waiting to be discarded
with the wrapping paper.

so....what "does" the orange represent and what does it mean? Is it the citrus "tang" or is it the cleansing?

My orange was always at the top of the stocking...

It was like "throw that sucker outta the way to get to the good stuff" on christmas mornings [img]smile.gif[/img]
