beginning

somebody was talking about why they write in a recent message. I just read a bunch and I'm not sure if I remember correctly but we were talking about language the other day in my poetry workshop and someone brought up the issue.

here goes.
I believe poetry is an attempt by people to speak in a foreign language about concepts and a reality that is apparent, yet undescribable. poetry is the explanation when there is no explanation but there is truth. we honestly don't have the tools. we don't have the language. there are beautiful things about our language but it is not beautiful enough to have the power to describe those things that need to be said in poetry. only the few artists who break out of the language, the music, the paint, color, form and present something wholly new, something entirely true yet still unspeakable reach what poetry has been intended for.

I've been going back to this recently but for me right now its important so I have to say it. this is not something I can do. this is not something you can do. this is something we strive for and reach and struggle and do everything we can to achieve and only in that struggle do we rarely find the grace needed. but we do not find this grace always and it is not always seen. its just there and we just have to go for it. if we had the language for poetry, it wouldn't be poetry, it would simply been communication, description, something trivial. the trick is, to understand that we do not speak that language but we can create it, find it, mold it, and most importantly sense it when we write poetry. the language of things we understand is for those who have accepted a reality that does not change. I want to speak in a language of things I do not understand. I want to be on the verge of knowing.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I'm searching for ideas tonite so I thought I'd stumble across. things have changed in my life since I started this board. I think in a month or two it will be the board's 4 yr anniversary. its weird to look back and think of the stuff I wrote 4 yrs ago, the stuff hannibal, machinery, anybody wrote 4 yrs ago. I think at that time I had this huge idealism that I didn't even understand. everything was so new and I was learning everywhere and this was a great place to let it all out.

I'd like to start over again and since this was a beginning for me, I'm coming back to the beginning. I don't know how it will work out and I'm not worried about it. I also can't guarantee anything anymore, but specifically I hope hanny and machine face read this. lets go back to the beginning. meet you there? everybody else is welcome. I don't know all of you anymore, but I'd like to learn.

Those were some good times... It's wild to think that in the course of these 4 years we've seen so much as individuals - and together as friends, we've grown apart in ways, together in others.
Yet here we are... were a lot of good times were had.. this binding entity of poetry.


Welcome back Brian - we've missed ya.
This was your creation in the beginning - and you are always welcome to call it home.

I really liked that post a lot too - it made a lot of sense... now I have to go think, while taking a crap - it's a marvelous place to think.

and i do want us to try. i've been wanting us to try for years, ever since those sunday nights down in the barnyard in the barn....i've just wanted to try.

and we all have great minds....its just how we get them out.
