What kind of "Heavy Metal" grunting are you talking about?
When first hearing Sepultura on CD, also thought they were nonsense-grunting, just to make noise before the microphone. But then went to a few concerts & was able to see Sepultura, MudVayne, Slipknot, Black Lable Society, Slayer, Marilyn Manson, and a buncha others. Casual listen on a radio of a song you're unfamiliar with might just sound like nonsense-grunting (especially with those Thrash-heavy "chunka-chunka-chunka" monotony bands), but watching these bands live and knowing the songs well, there's a lot more happening vocally than just grunting.
Sure, any little Metal-wannabe rocker can do the "grunt" thang, but that's why they're still dirt-poor wannabes. Even for "grunt-metal", the singer is gonna need vocal training. Shit, even Johnny Rotten had voice training before Malcolm let him into the Sex Pistols.

I'm unaware of what type of grunting you mean.. but what annoys ME, is the stupid RnB/Rap artists (and Rage Against The Machine.. I like 'em, but.. ARGH!) that ohh and ahh all throughout their songs. Not singing or harmonic ohh or ahh as seen in oldies.. but just a grunty "ehh" (see RATM - Bombtrack).
