called the fool and the company,
on his own where he'd rather be...
where he ought to be, he sees what you can't see,
    can't you see that?

maybe he's caught in the legend,
maybe he's caught in the mood.
    maybe these maps and legends...
    have been misunderstood?

down the way the road's divided,
aint me the places you have seen.
those who know what i don't know...
refer to the yellow, red and green?

    he's not to be reached...
    he's to be reached...

the map that you painted didn't seem real.
he just sings whatever he's seen.
point to the legend, point to the east,
point to the yellow, red and green

    maps and legends...
    is he to be reached?
    he's not to be reached.

he's not to be reached anymore...

just because a person has strokes of genius doesn't mean everything they do can be considered genius...so, familiar or not..... it doesn't make this genius

hahahahaa... i've been listening to REM as much
as i have listened to robert smith.

the problem with admitting you listen to REM is
the fact that REM ... no, scratch that....
michael stipe has basically made an ass out of
himself (and in advertantly, the rest of the band)
starting in the early 90s... by basically becoming
    so fucking commercial.

i originally overlooked this issue and marked
stipe as a trite individual that has forgotten
his roots. his arrogancy and self-centeredness
has caused me to revert to the closet when
listening to them. secondly... when the issue
of stipe's sexuality came into play (again in the
90's)... it made me want to wretch.

losing my religion was the marker.

at first i convinced myself that the sudden
rush to 'artistic' fame for the video/song
was merely their deserved desserts after a long
    haul (decade) of being side-lined....
    but i was wrong.

my justification -- for what then became the drab
commercialization of REM -- was stupid. michael
stipe lunged at the chance to sport any promotion
that would hail his name as 'edgy' and 'pure'...
(which, incidentially, is what happened to
    that dumbfuck eddie vedder... blah).

sporting a fucking NIKE hat at his public appearances
and drinking fucking pepsi was NOT what the
    standard of REM began as.

in addition to this, the submission of the other
bandmates to his self-propigated godhood, michael
stipe became solely recognized AS REM....
which over-shadowed the other band members.

    this pissed me off.
michael stipe has his abilities... but in no
way is he the life-blood of REM. mike mills,
as stated on another thread, is whom i consider
to be THE key member of REM... as well as
peter buck... whom hardly gets any recognition
    next to michael stipe...

mills gets recognition but only as a supporting
    member to stipe.

    screw that!

when listening to REM, i have noticed (for a while
now) that i deliberately avoid any and all
stipe-isms and direct my attention moreso to
the other aspects of the recordings.

    blah... no one cares.

i'm sorry this has rambled on and on....
but i've had it built up inside for about 13 years
and have only just received the chance to empty
    myself of these thoughts.

    REM is fabulous....
if you can get over the bullshit.

    ps... i adore stipe.

    and to gary and hanny....

as musicians yourselves... it would be highly
suggested that you overlook that pompous attitude
and delve into BETTER listenings to mills and buck.

    a talent lies there...
