Camp Darryl's "Little General" makes a top 30 showing at the PREP SPOTLIGHT SHOWCASE on Sept. 27 at Romulus High School.
I was in attendance as Shawn performed well coming off of knee surgery. His performance at the "Showcase" will boost his stock as he's looking to play at the next level.

**I saw Detroit Renaissance play(as a team), and I'll say this now: NO ONE IS GOING TO BEAT THEM.**

HERE IS A WRITE UP ABOUT THE SHOWCASE FROM PREP SPOTLIGHT.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2003 Prep Spotlight
Showcase. The event gave an opportunity to 200 of the very best high school
basketball players in Michigan to put their skills on display in front of
college coaches, several basketball scouts, and local newspaper writers. The
feedback we got from the college coaches, the players, and the parents
indicate this event was a huge success. Here is a look at some of the
standout performers from this great day of action.
CRAWFORD & HAIRSTON WOW THE FANS
Most Michigan high school basketball fans and players have heard of Detroit
Renaissance's star tandem of Joe Crawford & Malik Hairston. However, many
got their first up close look at the two All-Americans on Saturday. With the
crowd of players, parents, other high school coaches, and scouts gathered
around their court, Hairston & Crawford gave a performance that left people
talking about them in "Urban Legend" type conversations.
Crawford put on ariel show of backwards dunks, two handed tip slams, one
hand tomahawks, and a general lesson in Vince Carter Dunking Class 101.
Hairston was equally as impressive as he blocked shots, made no look passes,
and even went Tracy McGrady style and tossed an alley-opp to himself off the
glass that had the crowd jumping and yelling. Here is what some of the
observers had to say about these two.
"I knew they were good, but that performance was just ridiculous. They are
playing at a level that high school players shouldn't be able to. They are
clearly better than all their peers. They are as good as I've seen in my
time" - Kalamazoo area coach
"Man I didn't know Crawford could handle the ball like that. He's unreal.
He's so strong and explosive who can stop him? Then when you talk about
Mailk, where do you start. He's the best all around player I have seen." -
Spotlight Player
YOUNG PLAYERS SHINE
The event was once just for Juniors & Seniors but two years ago we started
letting a limited number of younger player participate. I'm glad we did.
There is noting like getting an early look at some of the stars of tomorrow.
Here are some comments on the Freshmen & Sophomores at the event.
"Alex Legion (Country Day) is clearly the best Freshmen in the state. His
play today showed me he is much better than advertised. I'm always leary
about how good Freshmen are supposed to be but that kid is legit. He's going
to be fun to watch for 4 years."
- Local Basketball Scout
"Leon Freeman (Belleville) was just awesome. He really played hard and he
attacked the basket. He's one of the better young players I saw today.
- Local high school coach
"The kid # 9 (Thomas Spitzley-Calidonia) was really impressive. He was one
s****** little playmaker who can really shoot the ball. I enjoyed watching
him."
-Prep Spotlight staff member
NEW PLAYERS MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES
The great thing about this event from my perspective is that several new
players make a name for themselves with the college coaches and scouts. Plus
they earn the respect of their peers. Here are just a few of the players
that came from seemingly nowhere to make a great impression on the scouts.
*Jimmy Small - Brother Rice - Kid shot the lights out all day long.
*John Lamar Hamilton - Ann Arbor Huron - Athlete was all over the place
making plays.
*Sabastian Jackson - Kalamazoo Central - Outplayed bigger name players all
day.
*John Head - Royal Oak Shrine - Represented for the Catholic League. Played
hard and scored often.
*Eric Oliver - Mt Clemens - Had a dunk fest in game # 1. Athlete was
impressive
*Mike Bowers - Mason County - Kid made the most of his opportunity.
*Rob Atherton - Utica Eisenhower - S****** PG will be on the college radar
now.
*Joe Harrington - Okemos - One of the best s******* we saw all day. Good
stroke.
