I have a 96 GSR w JRSC. I've been looking at all the usual options and don't see how one 2.25" SS mandrel bent cat-back exhaust will be better than another, except for the muffler design, and comparing straight through to straight through designs...performance won't really vary? Just noise levels?
I found a Magnaflow exhaust system with all the above for substantially less than the rest and a lifetime warranty to boot. Anyone have experience with one?
I don't mind paying for proven performance and like the tried and true, so I'm open to options still. One other minor detail, I'm in California...

I can't back it up with facts, but I think a 2.25" exhaust is to small for a JRSC GSR. Go for 2.5". I'm happy with the sound of my Greddy PE (a little smaller than 2.5"). It's relatively quiet until you get on it, then it roars.
If I had to replace it, I'd buy a straight thru 3" muffler section (Summit's import catalog lists many that replace a GSR's rear section) that I liked the look of
and have a muffler shop crush bend 3" piping from the cat back and weld in a resonator of some sort.
Can you tell I still resent spending $600 on a cat-back?
In other words, get the cheapest 2.5" or larger exhaust you like the look of.

I was looking at 3inch exhausts as well in summits catalog, which ones will fit, there are a lot of different designs, and i dont know which size canister and pipe inlet/outlet configuarion will work for us. Thanks for any info, I am thinking a 80 dollar canister will be more satisfying than the 550 i wasted on the tanabe pos.

I've bought over $1K worth of cat backs so far. I have a Greddy Sp in my car now. I regret paying $500 for the damned thing. If I had to do it over again, I'd find a *good* muffler shop and have them make me a system with the biggest pipe possible in the straightest way possible and experiment with various mufflers until I found the right one. It will be a lot cheaper and probably will result in the most performance.

I didn't realize people were unhappy with the aftermarket exhaust options! Sounds like Greddy is the only option greater than 2.25"?
Regarding going up to the 2.5" to 3" sizing, what effect do you think this would have on torque running the stock manifold? With larger piping, there would be minimal backpressure in the exhaust itself, but some back pressure is a good thing for low to mid range torque? I haven't heard any real good results replacing the header and I just got a new pipe under warranty.
My goal here is to cure my large dropoff in HP and torque at the top end because the car doesn't breathe enough, but I'm not sure I want to sacrifice the low end for it.
All the more reason to go the cheaper route if I end up not happy I guess.

Someone said that 3" was a little overkill for 6psi but good for 8psi.
When I put the Greddy PE on (before JRSC) I did feel a loss on the low end. Now? It seems like a very appropriate exhaust.

Any idea if the PE is anywhere close to noise limit compliance for CA. Couldn't find any data on their website. I've heard the PE is the loudest of the Greddy's. Interestingly, on their website, it looks like the Evo has the same size tubing? I'm assuming the table data columns listing "60-70" and "100-110" refer to exhaust piping and tip size.
