0W-30?

I just got some of that mobil 1 0W-30, about to put it in today. Any difference from 5W-30?

you're in texas anyways... what in the world are you using 0w30 for?

from what i know... thinner oil makes the engine start easier, but, thicker oil protects better.

mobil1 seems to be thinner than any dyno oil anyways, like they're 5w30 seems like others 0w30, and mobil1 10w30 seems like others 5w30.

I believe with 0w30 you would tend to have a little more oil consumption than if you were using 5w30 or higher.


I use 5w30 in my car.

Where did you pull that from??

The "W" stands for Weight. The weight of the oil will vary due to temperatures, etc. The "heaviest" or "thickest" the oil would be is the higher number (in this case the "30"). The oil would be heaviest in colder temperatures and the oil would be "thinner" "lightest" in high temperatures.

From what I've read and been told, you want the use the thickest oil you can use [within reason of course]. I personally use castrol gxt 10w30 during spring/summer/fall and use 5w30 during the winter. Lots of people use 10w40 and even 20w50.

"W signifies its winter rating, showing that it will perform well in particularly cold weather."

basically, the first number is the weight oil that your multigrade oil will act in cold temperatures (winter rating). The second number is the weight that your multigrade oil will act like in normal operating temperatures (what we're more interested as enthusiasts).

I believe the 0-30 is a special purpose oil intended for cars like the Honda Insight that are engineered to run on an ultra-light oil. I don't think it's a good idea to run it on anything else as it will probably burn off or blow through much faster than you'd like.
