Why are Ps2s such POS? Well, I know of a modification that fixes the most common problem with ps2s... Does it say disk read error?

Three years ago, a few months before FFX came out.
Does it say disk read error?
Yup, it can't read anything. Man, if I didn't believe that the DC is superior to PS2 before, I believe it now.

The PS2 hardware quality is very poor, that's one of its many flaws. The first series, sold in Japan, were uber crap; not only there was an insane shortage of units, but most of them broke in a year, and a good deal of them were defective and had to be returned. They suffered from broken trays, broken drive motor, non-working chips, poor quality read, massive overheating (you couldn't play for more than 4 or 5 hours and some people opted to modify their consoles to install fans on them), and other issues. One customer reported his DVD tray was broken, so he opened the console, and found a dead cockroach in the DVD drive. And even a batch of memory cards was defective and the cards had to be replaced. Oh, the firmware was rushed as well and sony had to bundle a disc to update it with the consoles.
The PS2 had like 9 revisions already, mainly to fix issues. The late ones are better, but many of them still have poor quality readers which won't read discs other drives have no problem reading. And they aren't very durable.
Mine is a V3 bought... I don't remember when, it was like a year and a half ago, and it's having some annoying read problems. Particularly, it won't recognize some (original) game discs, so you would have to reset and try again a couple times. It also takes much more than it should to do so. And I'm guessing I'll eventually have to have the DVD reader replaced in some modding shop or get a new one.
IRT CBA: PS2s are so bad because:
1. Sony rushed the design
2. Sony rushed production
3. It is a very bad, pretty unbalanced design which uses ridiculously expensive components. For example, its graphics chip was proven a bitch and inferior to T&L technologies, and the RAMBUS memory, was proven inconvenient and it's being abandoned. Better, simpler, and cheaper hardware were already available back then. (That's why the Dreamcast has better visuals for 1/4 the price.)
4. Because of these expensive components, they had price issues. The console was a steal, so they had to make it as cheap as possible, and the easy way to do this is by using bottom-quality components, which is what sony did. I wonder why does it have such a fame of being so high quality; their consoles always had very poor quality components and they break like no other.

Dang. Ok, well I'll try and scout some other help for you.
What exactly is wrong with your ps2 if its not the disk read error glitch(Which is VERY common)
But of course, like Wiseman said, the PS2 should be called the PoS.
