Gang brawl in Texas prison leaves inmate dead

LIVINGSTON -- One inmate was stabbed to death and another severely beaten today in a brawl involving rival prison gangs at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Polunsky Unit, officials said.

Corrections officers had to use chemical agents to break up the fight, prison spokesman Larry Fitzgerald said.

Jessie Hernandez, 32, serving 30 years for delivery of cocaine and marijuana in Collin County, was pronounced dead at a hospital in Livingston about an an hour after the fight involving five inmates broke out in a runway area outside a prison building, Fitzgerald said.

The prison is just west of Livingston and about 80 miles northeast of Houston.

Hernandez had been stabbed with a sharpened metal rod believed to have been fashioned from a piece of a cooking sheet, Fitzgerald said.

A second inmate, Elroy Ruiz, 48, serving 30 years from Nueces County for burglary, was taken to a hospital in Lufkin where he was receiving treatment for a broken jaw, broken nose, orbital fractures and other contusions.

The three other inmates involved the fracas were being questioned by prison authorities.

Fitzgerald said a serious review team would be assembled by prison administrators to investigate the case.

This is the kinda shit that pisses me off!

You get 30 years for fucking up your "OWN" life with coke, or enjoying your "OWN" life with pot.

Yet murders and child molesters get out in a few years due to overcrowding in the jails.

What kinda revolt needs to accure to legalize drugs, so we can keep the real sick fucks in jail.

80% of all inmates in jail are there for drugs.

I have a hard time rationalizing this.

No, they are not. Burglary still #1.
