Who will win and why?

I think RC should come away with this win. TS's defense is just not big or athletic enough to stop Berry. Honaker could barely keep him in check. RC also has a stouter defense than TS and they are a whole lot more disciplined. I would take RC by a couple TDs. Of course I have heard Rye Cove played terrible against St. Paul, RC will hafta come out with their "A" game against TS and if they do, they should come away with the win and steal the playoff spot from Haysi.

I would say Rye Cove would "earn" a playoff berth with a win over Twin Springs, not "steal" the playoff berth from Haysi. Considering that a playoff berth is something Haysi never had in the first place, it honestly couldn't be considered "stealing".

Haysi would win the Cumberland every year and if RC played in any other district in Region D, they would never make the playoffs.

The same could be said for several teams that play in Region D if they were in the Black Diamond as well. Rye Cove didn't want to be Division 2, that was a VHSL decision and they (Rye Cove) did take exception to the ruling. What are they supposed to do, give the playoff birth to Haysi because people on internet messageboards think that they shouldn't be in the playoffs? They should be back in Division 1 were they belong next year. If Haysi would have had a more competitive schedule this season, it could have been Gate City sitting at home this year instead of the Red Tigers of Haysi. All fingers should point at the Haysi AD or whoever does the scheduling for football. Maybe if they were to schedule more programs that are Division 2 or above they could be in the running for a wildcard berth into the playoffs. Look at their schedule...after the first 4 games, Haysi has 6 Division 1 opponents & only one of those currently has a winning record (Twin Valley at 5-4, a team they defeated 57-0). I realize Hurley and Twin Valley are district opponents, but how about Castlewood, Pound, Jenkins (KY) & Ervinton? Good lord! What average to above average Division 2 team couldn't defeat those opponents?

Maybe they (Haysi's AD/coaching staff) should worry more about cleaning up their own back yard (BDD and scheduling stronger opponents) and less about others (Rye Cove) getting the job done in their own (Cumberland District).

Still, it's not stealing a playoff birth, it's earning one. You can't steal something that wasn't in someone's possession in the first place.

Schedules are made with 2 year contracts so what was scheduled two years ago are the same games played this year so you are trying to judge how teams are going to be almost 3 years in advance. In southwest virginia because of isolation especially at a school like haysi travel concerns always play a factor in scheduling opponents. Scheduling an LPD school for haysi is tough because the LPD schools have 7 district games and most teams have rivals they like to play such as Powell Valley/Lee High or would rather play a Double AA school to improve their Power Points. Haysi used to play Norton which was a good game but was dropped by Norton. When Haysi picked up Pound it was in their State-Runner up season. Haysi always plays ervinton which is a county game and Castlewood was a playoff team last year. The Closest AA school for Haysi is Grundy a school Haysi can't compete with year in and year out making it better for them to schedule a Single A school who is going to win a few ballgames and they will get a few more power points. The next closest AA school is about 2 hours or more away from Haysi. On a bus it takes Haysi 45 minutes to an hour to get on a 4 lane something many people assume is a given. so there are many financial considerations to take into account when scheduling teams. plus teams have to want to play haysi as well. why would a school want to travel an hour and a half to play haysi when they can play the same caliber team 45 minutes away?

Honaker and Haysi's non district schedules are both jokes. Its a good thing Honaker is gettin some Div. 3 and Div. 4 schools, all of which are closer than all of our current non district teams anyway.

I don't like the arguement you made for the Ervington game. The same used to be said for Grundy continuing to play Twin Valley, even though TV was getting thumped badly. Neither team got anything out of the game, except maybe a good gate when the game was played at Grundy.

Haysi should drop Ervington, it doesn't help them against tougher opponents.

However, I do understand the situation Haysi is in. However, I am sure there are alternatives to playing Jenkins (any other KY team would be a better match). I do think keeping East Ridge should happen because ER should have a good football team within the next 2-3 years (even with high AA numbers, 3/4 of the kids never played organized football).

If they ever build that Coalfields Expressway through Buchanan and Dickenson Counties, I'm sure they will have more options opened to them in all sports as far as scheduling teams. Does Dickenson County even have a four-lane highway running through it? [img]confused.gif[/img] Buchanan County has 460, but good lord, you can't do above 50 MPH most of the way between Raven and Vansant 'cause of all the curves!
