    Hi, Richard,

    These are scarce as hens teeth, but there seems to be little demand for them at least. It took me over a year to come up with a pair, both on eBay. (Tip: check all the listings for green Altec rack units too, many come with accy. plug-ins installed, and some low-demand SS units sell cheap,=$10-20+frt). Since the 1579 was the only Altec plug-in with a yellow label, a hint of yellow in the right place in a rear photo could be the telltale clue (worked for me!). forums

    You might also try L&M Trading. Email an inquiry to;

    If your phono will be (very) near the Altec preamp, a 1579 in the standard rear socket will work fine, but if it will be farther than a 4-5 ft cable run, you might consider building a small unit with an octal socket and the appropriate PS for the 1579, mounted on or very near your turntable, providing a higher signal level for the longer cable run, and keeping the S/NR acceptable.

    Nice shovelhead pic, BTW!
